As rated by Rivals, K-States recruiting classes are usually close to the bottom of the Big 12, usually slightly higher than ISU's classes. Yet with their lower rated classes, they are still able to perform at a very high level in the Big 12, while ISU has remained close or at the bottom. The primary reasons for the difference in performance can be attributed to two things. The first is coaching and the second is player development. Both teams use their walk-on programs to fill holes and provide depth for their teams. The difference is that KSU has several walk-ons who have become all conference players. Several of their starting OL and DL this last year were originally walk-ons. I am not sure if anyone started at those positions this year for ISU. Besides its development of walk-ons, KSU also does a much better job with its recruited players. As for coaching, the won loss records for each teams speak volumes. Coach Snyder, year in and year out has competitive teams. His offense may change from year to year, to utilize the strengths of his players. At ISU, the offense changes from year to year because of the change in the coaches. Also, I think Coach Snyder has a firm grasp of both offense and defense and has a lot of say on what happens on both sides of the ball. KSU football does not change when assistant coaches change. At ISU, I believe that Coach Rhoads let his coordinators determine what happens on both sides of the ball. Two different systems, with divergent results.
