Just to add to kcclone's point... The current # of NBA players by team for some of the schools we're recruiting against:

KU-16
UK- 18
Michigan- 7
Mich State- 6
Louisville- 3
Arkansas- 2 (plus soon to be Portis)

ISU- 0

It's not easy recruiting against the big boys....

Crunch those numbers for guys drafted since the 2011 draft. That's what the real competition is. Obviously still an uphill battle.

Monk reached out to our staff, I doubt he did that if he was concerned about Fred and getting him to the NBA

And I am just stating the obvious retort. Its not like our coaching staff doesn't get to talk to the recruits as well and give their own pitch.

The biggest pitch against Fred right now is the NBA coaching gig rumors.
The buyout to the NBA is a small one, he is on teams wish list every year.

Cal did it and failed he ain't going back
Petino did it and failed he ain't going back plus he is getting up there in years.

Coach K, Boeheim, Williams, they are too old to make the jump.

Never sure why Self wouldn't want to give it a shot, at some point after winning the league every year ya think you would want a new challenge.

If your a 1 and done, maybe not a big deal but even then if you commit early the guy could be gone by the time you get there for that 1 year. I think that does scare kids and to a lesser extent their parents away.

I get why Self doesn't do it. So many times an NBA job is open because the previous guy got fired. Most of them were good coaches in a bad situation. Why go from a great situation at KU to a bad situation in the trigger happy NBA?

Here nor there
We all know he can do it. But the facts are the facts. We have had 1 player drafted and have some non-drafted D-League guys. Coach Cal and others eat us up for that. When you go against the big boys its not what you "can do" its prove it. Kind of like when a sales person can close a big deal....results talk.

Fred is the man and I want no one else at ISU...just stating the obvious and what other coaches are saying. All it will take is a Diallo or Monk to change this. Kind of like how important Wiggins was to Self for getting a top draft pick.

Yes, when people think of Self and Cal they think of turning straw into gold.

Come on, recruits are not dumb.If they buy that, Fred can just mention how much his NBA frontoffice buddies enjoy the warm weather, women, and beaches in Ames.

Ya, for a guy like Monk, the entire NBA thing shouldn't be that big of a concern, but he looks to be as close to a lock for 1 & done as anyone.

Style of play, comfort with coaches/players, location and/or hometown team are probably the biggest factors.

I'm sure he really likes our style of play, and hopefully he's enamored by Fred.

I just don't think this matters that much. It's like saying Michael Jordan would not have gone pro if he didn't go to UNC. The talent gap to begin with is huge. Do you think Anthony Davis would have went pro if he went to ISU? It's a ridiculous argument

What they should look at is this :

How many McDonald's AA did you have on your team compared to how many kids went pro?

We have had 1 MCD AA ever... and he went pro. We are 1 for 1.

As long as we are talking about power 5 schools - what they should be looking at is coaching fit, college fit, system fit, team fit, and if they have a chance to win.

You'd get laughed out of the room if your recruiting pitch was "hey we're one for one getting mcd aa to the league" never mind that one was 15 years ago.

I'll agree, those things are what recruits should be looking at, however some don't think it out as much as they should.

Past results say the pitch hasn't worked for blue-chip HS kids. It will change but as of now...

Well, its probably a little too soon to consider past efforts since he really hasn't had more than a few years to really be a realistic option for blue chippers. Fred was about as close as can get with Vaughn last year, and I think most would agree it wasn't Fred's track record with getting guys to the NBA that led Vaughn to choose UNLV. He'll land one soon.

All I said is that it hasn't worked thus far. Just a fact.

We've recruited more than one blue-chip in Fred's time here.

Like who? There's a big difference between making a final list for a Top 25 kid and having an offer out there for a blue chip. For example I wouldn't say we missed on Ellenson for 2015. Would you? We "recruited" him technically but I don't think he ever took an official here or anything like that so at that point he's just a guy with an iowa state offer next to his name on rivals.

I said "recruited". The fact that we haven't made the final lists proves my point even further. Shall we continue to dance?

We have not landed a blue-chip HS recruit. It is not arguable and we have tried. That doesn't mean we won't land 3 in the next class (I'll take one for starters)

The reason we haven't landed those guys is NOT because of anything Fred lacks or can't do. It's a time issue. It takes a lot of time to scrub the stink of McDermott completely and we've only been a top 15-20 program for like one year. Remember before last year the general consensus was we'd be fighting just to make the tournament. People act like lasting years finish was what isu has been for the past 4 years.....

I will say as good as Fred is at getting top transfers that lately, given our success, he's been less than stellar at the HS recruits. Naz and Niang clearly are great gets but he got those guys after year 1. Our program has been consideed a Top 25 program for two years now and this program has gotten as much national pub as any program outside of maybe a few, honestly. Fred is a brand name coach and every single Top 50 recruit absolutely knows who Iowa State is. I think part of the problem is three fold:

1- Fred is constantly rumored for heading to the NBA every single year. I do think this hurts us.
2- Recruits know that CFH will bring in 1-2 transfers a year and possibly over recruit them.
3- Fred seems to be going for broke with Top 10-20 kids.

this program has gotten where it is not because of Top 10 recruits but because of Top 100 kids. Personally I'd prefer to see Fred pulling in 1-2 kids who are ranked 50-100 and build around them. Like he's done. Now MT and CC are both Top 100 kids and in that mold but I don't see them being anytime more than reserve roll players. Just my opinion.
