Wining College basketball is still about the Jim’s and Joe’s. Got to have horses to run, and hopefully the X’s and O’s Is there for critical possessions and the last 4 min. I think any of the guys we are talking about can get some decent players. But if CSP has proven anything, class depletion has done him in, too many strikeouts and transfers. As much as we need a guy to bring talent in, we need him to be a retainer as well. Class stability is key and if a coach is out there that has shown that and his guys develop, he needs a strong look.

You have to give Thad Matta a call, he is only 53 years old, and even with his health problems he might be itching to give it one more try, just like Meyers did returning to coach in the NFL.

You have to have an identity as a team. You have to have a good staff that can coach AND recruit...everyone since Orr has brought talent to Iowa State.

Some have been good at coaching up the talent and/or retaining it..some haven’t..and some have been somewhere in between.

Everyone has brought in talent.

Thinking a guy that was a good recruiter here is the ‘no brainer’ pick because he knows Iowa State and is likeable is absurdly short sighted...and I hope if we hire TJ he’s awesome and I’ll totally support him from day one..but don’t act like people hate the guy if they want someone else

Think you better brush up on your Chris Beard history.

Think you better brush up on Iowa State history pre and post TJ..getting players hasn’t been a problem..hasn’t been a problem at UNLV compared to the rest of the mountain west either...coaching matters

*Albeit beard was at Texas Tech in the past and I had a brain fart on that..his resume before they hired him was much, much better than TJ’s..my apologies for the snarkiness btw..your comment was warranted on this

We need to kick the tires on Scott Drew and if he’s not interested I’d take Nate Loenser before either TJ or Devries.

If Pollard is drawing exclusively from the mid-major pool and there's no home-run hire plan, Nagy's gotta be on the map. He might not be the way to go, but there's more to his body of work as head coach to assess, compared to Otz & DeVries.

I'm open to hearing assessments why he'd be a no-go.
because the decision has already been made?

There is literally no other coach I would rather have. But he’s got a good thing going at Baylor. Although he only makes $2.7M. I‘d throw $4M at him and see what happens. At the very least force Baylor to spend more money.

Just occurred to me. With TJ having 8 seasons as assistant coach at ISU, does he have the most seasons at ISU (head coach or assistant) since Orr and his assistants left in 1994?

Probably...Hallihan was here for 12 under Orr and people were upset he didn’t get it over Floyd.

My problem with people pleading for Otzelberger is that they give him so much credit for our success under Fred and his recruiting but Fred is the only head coach he’s been on a staff for that’s had success..and literally anyone would’ve won in the summit league with Mike Daum as a junior and a senior which he inherited..he gets no blame for his years under McDermott or Romar and has struggled at UNLV with the best recruiting base in the mountain west...it’s not a HUGE sample size but we haven’t had a coach since before Orr that couldn’t get talent to Ames...success has come with coaching and retaining players..that should be our first priority IMO and I’m not sure how anyone can say TJ has shown he’s the best man for the job in that regard...

Maybe he’d be good?...but there’s a lot of more impressive resumes around the mid-major level than his as far as coaching goes and they’d almost certainly bring talent to Ames too..

What would be absolutely phenomenal of whoever our next hire is would be if people quit praising that, ‘they’re playing hard’ like that’s some sort of an accomplishment instead of being a given...it’d be great to have a team that occasionally outrebounded people and could occasionally beat someone other than Jackson State or Arkansas-Pine Bluff if the shots weren’t dropping

TJ couldn’t even get the Drake job when he interviewed for it.
