Wayne’s team lost some close ones early in the conference but the end of the season was a bit brutal. Lost to a 7-9 Nebraska at home by double digits, loss to 4-12 Baylor by 22 on the road and finished the year losing 7 of the last 9. No post season for a squad that started the season in the Top 25. I was also in Dallas for that Big 12 tournament and it seemed very clear that the team was ready to be done with the season. Stark contrast to Wayne’s first year. 2006 was also a bad year of basketball for the Big 12. 7 of the 12 teams had losing records in the conference and only 4 teams went to the NCAA tournament.
But you are missing the point. Wayne got the job with his resume. He was fired for the on/off court issues after three years. If Wayne’s resume was good enough for you back in 2004 then why would you have an issue with T.J. or the resume of any another competent mid-major?

Yeah, that was a really disappointing team and season. I also remember losing to Texas A & M on a late 3-point shot and losing a game at Oklahoma that we really should have won. Had we actually won it we could have put ourselves right on the "bubble" for that point in the season.

It's too bad that it didn't work out for him; I really liked WM on a personal level a lot. My father used to be a professor at ISU (now retired), and he got to know WM a bit, primarily due to having Jackson Vroman as a student in one of his classes. Jackson, RIP, probably to no one's great surprise, was not a particularly disciplined student, so my dad worked with the coaching staff to help him out in the classroom (I do want to say that for whatever Jackson's academic issues were that my dad really enjoyed him as a person). Anyway, back in the fall of 2004 when I was visiting Ames from Florida my dad talked to WM about letting me in to see a practice for a few minutes. I gladly went, chatted with Gary Thompson for a few minutes (yeah, I know I'm name dropping) and introduced myself to WM. He could not have been nicer or more gracious to let a total stranger watch practice for a little while, so I'll always have a soft spot for him based on that.

It's also kind of funny; for the reputation that he had as a "player's coach" and for being such a nice guy (and he is), I also saw and heard him absolutely light up Curtis Stinson for not playing through a foul during a drill. Dropped the F-bomb and everything. You would never know he had such a loud voice until you heard it for yourself.

Wayne got hired after our first options turned us down because BVDV sucked...he was hired to keep the guys we had coming back and the recruiting class we had coming in..it wasn’t because of his resume

I know they haven't. I think there is a consensus that hiring TJ means the return of Hoiball. I've watched a couple games now and the style is more like a combination of Wisconsin on the offensive end with less discipline and Hoiball style defense.

So the TJ crowd seems to be jumping on this disliking. I again have two specific questions for them...

1) How many quarters of a UNLV coached TJ team have you watched?
2) What did you see on the court that you liked that you think would make him a good coach at Iowa State? (note by on court I'm excluding recruiting - I agree TJ is an amazing recruiter)

I should state I want TJ to be the guy. We could get him and I think he would stay in Ames a long time. I want TJ to be the guy and as a result I went out and watch a bunch of UNLV basketball and I did so wanting to see the guy for Iowa State. I didn't though, but I'd love to have a conversation about what I missed. I'm very pro that concept of TJ, but he's got to have the coaching that fits the concept.

(and I'd love to see this thread be more of a basketball discussion of TJ and Devries, I haven't watched as much Drake but I'm starting, and what they would bring as a basketball mind to the program vs a discussion of Wayne Morgan who no matter what people think of him will not be our next coach)

I’ve watched the better part of 4 of T.J’s games this year. Their game against Alabama, both Utah State games and their second game against Nevada. I also watched 3-4 of their games last year. The personnel was better last year.
I also think you see a big difference between their game against Alabama and the games against Utah State. The offense they ran against Alabama had a great deal of motion and ball movement. Utah State is elite defensively and really took away any flow. However I have seen them do a nice job of inverting the offense and taking advantage of their 6”5 guard on the block.
Now I will also say that I was very disappointed in what I saw in the last five minutes of the Nevada. Multiple bad shots at the end of the shot clock and TO’s. But I also saw a quick hitter out of bounds for a made 3 late in the shot clock.
He isn’t a finished product. But I saw more than what I see consistently from the last two Iowa State teams.

I was pretty young when this happened, although I remember him and the team.. What happened exactly?

Wayne had some potential troubling recruiting issues.

it was a lot of if you only knew what I know stuff in the internet world, but it was inferred pretty heavily.

people loved Larry because of the tinsley years, and Wayne was not extremely popular with the fan base in general.

Met him a few times, he’s a good guy. But he was never going to be the long term answer Greg was rumored to be alfords replacement when he was fired or forced out, and JP thought he was one upping the hawks by hiring him.

Did you miss that TJ is about 18 months on the job and inherited a mess and is in the process of cleaning house and rebuilding? You ***** act like he’s in Year 5.

I've mentioned this another time. Back when WM was coaching at ISU, I ran into a conference commissioner of a mid-major conference, at a neighbor's house - this was in another MW city. ISU had just come off the NCAAs season, and I asked him what he thought of WM. Without missing a beat, he simply said that WM is a bag man, was back at Syracuse for Boeheim, and still is (at the time).

Take it for what it's worth. I don't have inside connections, so it's funny how this convo came up. I do know that they guy was, in fact, the conference commissioner. I have no idea if he's innocent as the pure-driven snow or if he'd somehow been burned by WM in the past and held a grudge. Just know what he told me, for what it's worth - you can decide if it's worth anything. Supports the rumors. May or may not have hard facts behind it. I don't know.

Rebuild? TJ just got swept by Alford, losing one by 30 and the other being outscored 19-4 at the end of the game.
They were better under Marvin Menzies.

S*** I almost forgot about that one. A fine squandering of a win.

The win at OU iirc would have maybe kept ISU at least in the NIT.

I just remember ISU had a lead, and Blalock tried go around the waste on the approach of the bucket for no reason and turned it over at a crucial point.

That team and era were weird.

Hoiberg is not coming back. Otz, Smith, and DeVries are unproven at this level. If we are to change, we need a better option. Haven’t seen that yet. A bird in hand . . .

It was posted in one of the other threads, Becky Hammon. Assistant coach for the S.A. Spurs, if she is smart enough to work for Popavich , I'm pretty sure she can coach at ISU. She's only making $200,000 offer her a million bucks or so and see what happens. I'm more of a Devries fan then TJ, but lets be real I don't have any say who the next coach will be.
Hell maybe Prohm and Co. can go on a run and he comes back next yr.

That is out of the box thinking. I like it.

T.J. finished 12-6 in the MWC and T2 in his first year at UNLV. That was the best conference finish they have had since 2008 under Lon Kruger.

They also won at SDSU last season, and the Aztecs were a likely #2 or #3 seed at the worst.

That was me.

I think she’s a hell of a coach, won a summer league championship with Kyle Anderson as her star. She also has the respect around the league as being a great mind. She’s definitely has the backing of her head coach. She will be an nba coach at some point.

best thing was earlier in the year, pop decided he was tired of watching that night, and decided to get kicked out, so she took over.

to a man on the team, everyone started played harder, and then demar and Rudy and patty did their own pop impersonation with the media when asked if they thought it was weird playing for her

she also got some love from Lebron too.

And Menzie went 11-7 in the conference the year before and he was fired. Some "mess" TJ "inherited," as the poster claimed.
To update, TJ is 3-5 in the conference this year, 6-9 overall, with more of his own players...

3 of the starters from Menzies never played for T.J. I would imagine at the end of the year UNLV finishes 9-7 in the conference. Is that going to change your opinion?
