Agree.

I will also point out that one hawkeye fan that texted me about the yards, I didn't even bring it up, and tried to defend it. He said that due to turnovers with short fields, that Iowa didn't get the opportunity to get yards. My question was, why didnt you score 4-5 touchdowns then and settle for punts and field goals so much. If it wasn't for the turnovers, they would have had the same yards and less points.

The defense was great. Even with the short field situations that they had to deal with they shut down Iowa early on with some 3 and outs and short drives. Iowa's scoring drives:

2nd quarter:
8 plays 49 yards 4 yard TD run
10 plays 71 yards 26 yd TD pass

3rd quarter:
6 yard fumble return when Breece coughed it up
4 plays - 8 yards 51 yd FG kick

4th quarter:
6 plays 18 yards 22 yd FG

Other than the 2nd TD score in the 2nd quarter you can blame most of that on bad field position due to our offense turning it over or punt team not flipping the field like Iowa was doing whenever they punted.

Iowa ran 20 less plays than us while having the edge on time of possession 31:38 to 28:22. We held Iowa to just 1.7 yards per rush and 5.0 yards per pass which I would take those kinds of averages any game. Bottom line is our 4 turnovers and giving Iowa a short field to work with often was the difference. Iowa has an elite punter and it put us in a position to have to drive a long field many times but Iowa basically had 1 big/long scoring drive on us the entire game and the defense did more than their part to keep us in that game other than forcing turnovers themselves which is going to happen some games this season with the talent and experience on that side of the ball.

This offense has sustained long drives the past couple of years with this core group of players so whatever is going on right now needs to be fixed quick as there is not much margin for error this season if they want to accomplish certain goals.

Yeah, without the turnovers, just in the second half, Its 17-14 ISU. 49 yards is long enough that I would say they still drove the ball.

Now that I've calmed down, I am encouraged by the defensive performance by our guys. What is all of this hype surrounding Goodson for Iowa? He looked slow and was ineffective all day. Their backup looked quick and lively, but also had the fumble that ended up getting overturned. Hot take: Iowa will have a let down game or two due to their offense. ISU will be ok moving forward.

He is fast and shifty he blew by Rose a couple times and Rose isn't that slow. A good defense hitting him in the backfield will make a good back look average. I think he may be faster than Breece, someone can check that. Not better but might be faster.

If this is true, I have yet to witness it. He looks like a plodder to me.

This is why I wish the media wouldn't run with all these win in the margin stories. Makes Campbell look really bad when ironically this is how most of our losses over the last 2-3 years have gone down. You don't win in the margins when your ST play is marginal at best. I am never confident when our guys line up to punt, kick FGs, XPs, kickoff, field punts etc. That is all margin stuff that Campbell has harped on (especially 2 years ago) but has never lived up to expectation.
In fairness, if we always won in the margins we’d win every game. We haven’t been blown out since Campbell’s first year, and practically every close game is decided in the margins.

That was one of most dominating defensive performance by ISU vs Iowa I've seen...

Is there any doubt at all in any way if the TO's were flipped that ISU wins that game walking away by 3-4 TD's? But...Iowa D made those plays and it's part of the game.

We could have overcome poor ST play in this game but the TO's were absolute demoralizing killers.

Nothing else to it than that.

Our future at QB looks really bright and Eli Sanders played well in the 4th Qtr. Definitely want to see him more in the run game...
The Best defensive effort by ISU was in 1977 and now the score Ladies and Gentlemen.....Iowa State 31 and the Squawkeyes....O.....Yes, Zero and I don't remember the Squawks getting past midfield!!!!

Against UNLV I would like to see some more of Eli Sanders and Jaylin Noel.

Noel hasn't gotten many targets yet but Sanders really looks ready to play. He is not afraid and has serious speed, seriously wondering if he can't be a slot receiver with his build and wheels. This team desperately needs a Deshaunte jones type who can get the easy 5-10 yard short passes.

As horribly as we played, if Breece Hall doesn’t fumble for the scoop and score we might have had a chance to win with a touchdown or send the game to overtime with a field goal on that last drive. We might have overcome the three interceptions, but the defensive score did us in.

It's really tough to make hypotheticals like this IMO. If the game was tighter in the 4th quarter Iowa doesn't move to prevent d and continues to stuff our offense. It was pretty clear to everyone I think that it was over by the 4th.

I know we loathe manning but that direct snap to Jirehl and then I think they did it again with Breece in the second half was a nice little wrinkle.

It was some real 'here we are, stop us' power football and it's unfortunate that it didn't continue. Not to say to keep running that set but downhill with urgency is the best for this team.

Agreed. And it's not just Milton. It's as if punt returns are something this staff is just trying to survive rather than exploit. There is zero confidence instilled in the returners and it's been this way since he's been here.
Can you imagine having Trevor Ryen on this team returning kicks? The guy was fearless. Since I believe he is on our S&C staff maybe we can put him in a uniform and sneak him out there.... ;)

Exactly. That Miller kid from I think Gilbert was great as well. Todd Miller?

Definitely a double-whammy on that play. No pressure w/ a misjudged FC, or hurried punt with FC (or bad punt goes short & rolls dead), you can live with one of those. But both -- ugh.
We need to put two guys back to receive the punt.

"Fact of the matter is" that we turned the ball over 4 times. Stats below...

Total yards: Us 339 to their 173
Passing yards: Us 252 to their 106
Rushing yards: Us 87 to their 67
Yards per play: Us 4.9 to their 2.9
First downs: Us 21 to their 11

FUMBLES LOST: Us 1 to their 0
INTERCEPTIONS THROWN: Us 3 to their 0

That was the problem. Not play calling.
Iowa just doesn't make many mistakes or hurt themselves. We did. Part of the game. If we want to beat Iowa we have to play clean and let the offense fly. Defense was great.

It's perplexing. Not sure why we don't play our best early in the year?
