I can't help but think of when it came out that SDSU had asked for an extension and all the SDSU fans on Reddit were saying "No harm in asking, the worst thing they can do is say no." It turns out, there was something worse. LMAO.

SDSU: Hey, I'm thinking about dumping you for the hotter girl up the street, but I'm not quite sure yet.

MWC: Oh really? Well let me save you the trouble of deciding. I'm dumping you now.

PAC crumbles, SDSU readmitted to the MWC at half share for 3 years.

I get that this doesn't look good for SDSU, but the Pac10 will either stay together or implode in the next 45 days.

Either way, I bet they have a home in 2024 and make more money than MWC.

I wonder if MWC put conditions on taking SDSU back and SDSU wouldn't agree to. Aka stiffer penalty if they leave before current MWC TV deal expires.

This is actually perfect for San Diego. If they get an offer from the PAC-12 in the next couple months they get to leave for the pre June 30 lower buyout because the Mountain West said they’re out. If no offer comes they seem to have pretty good legal grounds to argue they didn’t formally leave and they’ll get the withheld money. They’re basically getting a free extension because the Mountain West is throwing a fit.

The MWC has just as good legal grounds that SDSU did formally notify their intention to leave, and as a result SDSU must:

1. Forfeit their $6.6 million payout for this year.
2. Pay the MWC an additional $10.4 million.
3. Receive no payout on July 1, 2024.

Do I think this is how it will play out in the end? Probably not.

The MWC is like the jilted wife who just threw all of SFSU's clothes in the street. Chances are she will let him back in the house, but only after he spends the next night or two sleeping in the car.

The other members actually have some incentive to follow through. SDSU just made a crapload of money in NCAA tournament credits that get paid to the conference. The remaining members can split those extra millions about themselves and not have to offer a share to anyone else they'd consider as a replacement.

There are two tangible things the MWC can do (or try to do) to punish SDSU. It is much more than a jilted wife, and they can do a lot more harm than say “no”

First, is what they’ve already done, withhold the $6.6M as part of the buyout fee. This is significant. SDSU doesn’t have copious amounts of donors, or new potential TV money yet, as they don’t have an offer from the P12. Their current budget is already heavily subsidized by the University and just incurred a huge amount of debt to build their new football stadium.

They can’t afford to lose $6M in revenue, even in the short term. I don’t think they can afford to pay an additional $17M in exit fee (on top of the original $17M exit fee) up front either, hence they asked for the extension. At this point they have to aim for the 2025 season to join the P12 rather than pay a higher exit fee, so they need the MWC for 2024 and, more importantly, they need that $6M payout now.

The second thing the MWC can do is parlay SDSU’s financial situation and try to get them to sign a longer agreement/harsher exit fee. Whether that works or not, I’m not sure, but the MWC has SDSU by the balls with this stance. It’s not something SDSU fans should just shrug off and say well, we’ll just pay more to join the P12 or we’ll just join in 2025.
