The Mountain West may lose an additional $17 million if the Pac picks them up this year. And the Mountain West will lose the money San Diego State brings in for sports. However, this may galvanize the members for a tighter, stronger conference. All similar as we know to the Big 12.

The MWC has just as good legal grounds that SDSU did formally notify their intention to leave, and as a result SDSU must:

1. Forfeit their $6.6 million payout for this year.
2. Pay the MWC an additional $10.4 million.
3. Receive no payout on July 1, 2024.

Do I think this is how it will play out in the end? Probably not.

The MWC is like the jilted wife who just threw all of SFSU's clothes in the street. Chances are she will let him back in the house, but only after he spends the next night or two sleeping in the car.
At least she didn't cut off his johnson. :D That would be hard to cum back from. Puns intended.

Oh I don't know. Pacific Coast Time Zone, 23 million person SoCal market, the best expansion team available to the Pac, etc... I'd say she's a 5, but I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :)

23 million people and maybe 2 million of them might care about college sports. SDSU is hot now in BB but it's not like they are a long term namebrand. I'd say let them stew in this mess they've created.

San Diego (I've been a few times) is a phenomenal city. A lot of it though, isn't people who grew up there/are vested in SDSU, and are military, hospitality type industries.

SDSU: Hey, I'm thinking about dumping you for the hotter girl up the street, but I'm not quite sure yet.

MWC: Oh really? Well let me save you the trouble of deciding. I'm dumping you now.
Wish I would have run this play years ago.

Yeah, a lot of Californians don't give a rip about college sports. However, it's not the proportion of the population that cares about college sports that matters, it's the total number of persons who care about college sports.

With a population of only 3 million, I'm guessing there are fewer Iowans who care about college sports compared to all of southern California.

More importantly, SDSU is located in the Pacific time zone, and is the Pac's only natural expansion option.

All that said, I'm fine if the Big 12 doesn't pick up SDSU. I just don't think they're as horrible an option as others do.
