Can we change the name of”NIL” when it’s clear the “NIL” is really about fundraising to pay student athletes and nothing about name, image, likeness?

That or everyone needs to revert to what the NIL was intended for: student athletes being paid for their use in marketing (commercials, autograph sessions, video games, etc)

I liked JP’s comment on the 365 sports interview where he said coaches salaries were based on what money they could bring in. Maybe the same should be done for athletes: they can now get paid for endorsements. They can go out and seek their own supplemental income

Just my two cents. I’m sure it won’t go over well, but I just don’t like that idea of buying championships. It’s not a great model for Major League Baseball, and it’s not a great model for college sports. But I get that’s the current landscape and ISU has to do what it needs to do to be competitive. I just don’t like the model as a whole

As far as I can tell the only athlete at ISU who is doing well with NIL as intended is Audi Crooks, some TV ads, some bank and car dealership deals and lots of t-shirts at wbb games. Oh and a restaurant deal.

True. I just think the model needs to be reviewed. A radio host on KFAN said that could you imagine if professional athletes were unrestricted free agents every season with no salary caps? That’s the current college landscape. It likely would quickly lead to the schools who spend more will be more successful.

I simply am not in favor of this model as it stands now, but that’s just my amateur opinion, which is about as valuable as having a winter coat while stranded on a tropical deserted island

TJ is a top ten coach. Also you rarely see people leave teams that are performing as well as ISU does for another school. When players transfer the don’t know how they are going to mesh with the other guys, the coach, the campus, how they will fit into the new scheme etc.

The only time key players at high performing transfer is if they are unhappy with something at the school or if they were severely under recruited and have a dream school in mind.

Since NIL portal has started we have seen very few key players transfer to other programs over NIL. Usually they leave due to a coaching issue, a play/performance issue, or outside issues.

Well and Tyrese Hunter

I don’t mean to be causing a panic alarm, but it’s simple economics. We have guys on the basketball (and football) teams being offered double salaries by B1G and SEC schools. You can say it’s illegal and all the like, but it’s happening. So we either give up or try to raise more money. The portal opens for basketball end of March and for Football in early April. Both head coaches feel a direct correlation with winning and our ability to keep players. We are hundreds of thousands of dollars behind on our priority folks. Will they stay for a discount and the good of the whole? I hope so! Otherwise, let’s do all we can to keep them here.

If I am making several million and the stress is lower where I am, yes
Is this assuming that ‘staying at Iowa State’ is the lower stress option for a player? What’s if… it’s not?

And somehow also in this hypothetical situation, the player here at Iowa State is already making several million? :)

With you liking my comment about Jefferson and your posts in this thread you've got me worried Brent! I wish I had more disposable income to give but doing what I can.

At some point it won’t be all about the money. Just look at Kansas. Players want to win too. Can we be competitive enough in NIL? Yes. Strong culture beats highest payroll 99% of the time.
We are currently not competitive enough with the big dogs so I guess we hope for the best! Would you take $400k less per year for your job?

Don’t mean to cause issues, but it’s pretty simple good or bad. Those that just say “oh they’ll stay” don’t understand the real financial differences. I don’t love the situation but doing my best to bridge the gap.

I totally get your point and understand it.

I do think that it is being confused in this particular thread though. This thread was started about TJ taking the Indiana job and I think you are right that the reason he could consider it is that we aren't competitive in NIL. But when reading this thread it is easy to think that you are referring to TJ taking an extra 400k and the argument that it would be a bit stupid of him to do that is somewhat valid.

We probably need a completely new thread about how we are going to lose Jackson and Jefferson and whoever if we don't get our **** together on NIL.
