Don’t mean to cause issues, but it’s pretty simple good or bad. Those that just say “oh they’ll stay” don’t understand the real financial differences. I don’t love the situation but doing my best to bridge the gap.
Totally get it. I think ISU brings a lot of intangible value which players do understand but there is certainly a point where I would not fault a kid for taking a massive payday

We are currently not competitive enough with the big dogs so I guess we hope for the best! Would you take $400k less per year for your job?
I actually don’t think it’s a relevant comparison.

These are college kids. They are in college. Does anyone remember how awesome college was!? They are in the late teens/early twenties. Generally, young kids are open new things and new opportunities in a much, much different way than let’s say a 45 year old office worker or school teacher or realtor or local business owner or whatever, where you’ve likely had roots down for years, bought a house, own things, started a family, lived in a neighborhood, go to local community events at school or whatever.

College basketball kid is going to be like: “… Yeah, college and basketball and the NIL is nice here at [TCU], but for twice as much money I’ll drop everything and go have a great time doing pretty much the same thing at [Georgia] and make a crap ton more money.”

Loyalty just really is not much of a “thing”, unless it’s a Tamin type situation. I didn’t blame Tyrese Hunter for taking the bag and I wouldn’t blame any of our current players for doing the same. It would SUCK but these are college kids. I know we love the “Once a Cyclone!” mantra, but it just might not be THAT deep for some of these guys.

I totally get your point and understand it.

I do think that it is being confused in this particular thread though. This thread was started about TJ taking the Indiana job and I think you are right that the reason he could consider it is that we aren't competitive in NIL. But when reading this thread it is easy to think that you are referring to TJ taking an extra 400k and the argument that it would be a bit stupid of him to do that is somewhat valid.

We probably need a completely new thread about how we are going to lose Jackson and Jefferson and whoever if we don't get our **** together on NIL.
I don’t know how to make this anymore clear then. This isn’t about TJ but how we keep the guys that allow him to be successful.

The THREAD WAS STARTED ABOUT TJ. I think that's what might be confusing. I don't think what you are saying is great. But when the first post is about TJ taking the Indiana job, that is what is in people's heads when they read everything.

That plus this is not for $400,000 more. The money they would throw at the right coach is 2-3X what TJ currently makes. Like $3-5MM/year more.

See this is where the confusion comes in. I'm pretty sure Blum is talking about our players taking a 400k raise or not.

It seems premature to say he would consider IU when he currently has a team that is considered one of the best in the country in his fourth year on the job. It may get to the point he feels he can't compete at ISU but I don't think we are there yet. Of course we don't want to find out if it can get that bad, so please everyone donate to WeWill!

Indiana is funny. They are the Nebraska of college basketball. Ironic they are below Nebraska this year in the Big 10 standings. That’s saying something. If they get TJ, good for them. I just don’t see it happening.

He is, but he is correctly connecting the dots.

We have to keep TJ happy. That is our reality.

We keep TJ happy by retaining the players he wants to retain, and being able to get at least some of the guys he wants to get in the Portal.

Would TJ specifically consider Indiana? Who knows. But would TJ potentially consider a different school down the road IF Iowa State cannot competitively keep the players he wants to keep? And yeah, obviously that hypothetical school too would have to be able to retain the right players in order to keep him (or any coach) happy.

I don’t mean to be causing a panic alarm, but it’s simple economics. We have guys on the basketball (and football) teams being offered double salaries by B1G and SEC schools. You can say it’s illegal and all the like, but it’s happening. So we either give up or try to raise more money. The portal opens for basketball end of March and for Football in early April. Both head coaches feel a direct correlation with winning and our ability to keep players. We are hundreds of thousands of dollars behind on our priority folks. Will they stay for a discount and the good of the whole? I hope so! Otherwise, let’s do all we can to keep them here.
Weren’t you saying it would get better once revenue sharing comes into effect?

Regardless, this has to be tackled at the institutional level. Doing things like borrowing against the future to cover costs, directing donations to NIL, cutting scholarships in non-revenue sports etc

Without taking drastic measures, there is no keeping up with BIG and SEC. Unfortunately the P2 era was always going to be a bigger issue in basketball in which we could actually slip in recruiting, and there’s no new postseason access to offset. And that’s before they take over the NCAA Tournament in 2032.

Yes, however once we get though the next four months it will at least make the rules more clear. It’s literally one month at a time in this era and right now we could use more funding to keep the current group together. Rev sharing starts July 1

Suggesting no new postseason access and a takeover of the NCAAs is quite the amusing hot take.

I know we need more money. I’ve personally messaged you about a small match and haven’t gotten a response.

First Lady Alison's support system in the United States resides in Ames, IA (I'm assuming). She is a big reason why I think TJ won't chase a salary elsewhere.
