Iowa has a ton of question marks. We have some grown A men on our defensive line going up against an unproven Hawkeye Oline and unproven running backs. Their passing game and Noah Fant flourish off of play-action pass. Stop the run and win first down you remove the element of play-action and they will have a hard time moving the ball. We are built to beat them this year.

Jack Trice will be absolutely electric for that OU game if we enter that contest 2-0. That's all I'm gonna say about that one. Let the chips fall where they may.

Brian Ferentz is a meathead, but he called a great game against ISU last season. We stopped the run for the most part, but they had their TEs running free all game. They always recognize our blitzes. I don't remember really getting after their QB since 2005. I think Bailey/Jackson is potentially a favorable matchup for ISU, and he could change the game.

I don't know much about Iowa's running backs, but I don't think they have a Wadley that can get 10-15 yards on his own. I don't think they will be able to line up and run it down our throats, so I'm hoping Ferentz get a little too prideful and forgets his tight ends.

And for the love of god, can Brian Peavy show up for this game? He's been roasted the last two seasons and then lights out the rest of the year.

I played cautious and chose 2-2. I have Iowa penciled-in as L, but the more I see about each team's returning players and roster strengths, no reason that isn't winnable. Should've won last season, and that game happened before ISU started to find its footing.

I'm hesitant to expect to beat OU back-to-back, seems too good to be true.

I agree with "they always recognize our blitzes"......and the reason for that is very simple.....The CHOKE eyes practice against our defensive and offensive sets every spring practice at least until the season starts......Its instructive to me that the only time that didnt really work, was when we played the game in november.....We Won, the CHOKES lost, and thats the reason the boys over east always want to play the game early.......aka "our wonderful players" er CHOKES cant remember ISU's sets that long......One of Prune faces er Raisin faces wide receivers and I now quote him..."I get sick of running plays against Iowa State's defense".....Thats just how desperate that CHOKE eye nation is to win the biggest game of the year.......Dont believe me?....Look it up it was in the Locust Street Liar...sports section of course

I think it is almost more important to ask how the first seven go.

v. SDSU
@ Iowa
v. Oklahoma
v. Akron
@ TCU
@ OSU
v. WVU

Absolutely brutal.

If we get out of that 4-3, then I am impressed.

That is brutal. If we start out 2-2 in the first 4, we could very easily be 2-5 after the first 7. We won't be favored @TCU, @OSU, or at home against WV IMO.

Look at my signature. I honestly do not think we beat Iowa this year even though I think we'll be the better team

I don't really understand this train of thought. The only reason a better team loses to an inferior team is if they are unprepared (out coached) or unmotivated.

Neither will be the case for either team this season. If you think we'll lose because we're not as good, that's fine by me. Or if you think Kinnick stadium pushes them over the top

It’s a one game sample. Upsets happen due to more than just out-coached or unmotivated.

I hope expectations aren't too high. Maybe it's the long-time Cyclone football fan in me that won't allow me to expect 8-4 type seasons like many of you guys (and I'd have to assume those voting for 3-1 are leaning toward a year like last year in total record).

With 95% confidence, I think the record will be either 3-1 or 2-2 after 4. I think I like to set expectations lower so that when the team exceeds them, I'll be pleasantly surprised. Thus, I voted 2-2 as the most likely and reasonable expectation. Both are still acceptable starts to the season, even though 3 -1 would be more enjoyable!

We're not unprepared. We'll prepare a week for the game that they've been preparing for since January. That's why I think we'll be the better team and lose

I'm guessing 4-0 simply because two wins in a row over Oklahoma hasn't been done before.
Hopefully I'm not both correct (a second win over Oklahoma) and the record is 1-3 at the end of four.

Have to be 4-3 after 7 if we want to improve on last season.
I’m pretty sure that if we’re 7-0 after 7, we can still manage to improve on last season.

Lots of things hadn’t been done before, before Matt Campbell got here.

I took a closer look at Oklahoma this afternoon. Sure, it’s early to tell, but it looks like their defense might have some really young players—as in, true freshmen—at key positions.

Then there’s the whole quarterback thing. Whoever wins the job will not be the s cons coming of Baker Mayfield.

Given that we play them a week after they host UCLA, on a mid-September day in front of a packed Jack Trice house (on MidAmercan Energy Field—did I do that right?)...let’s just say that I like our chances.[/QUOTE]

It’s great to work with you tagteaming the win loss poll. Your post actually had a poll which is greatI think it’s cute the way you changed it to 4 games instead of 3 to try to distance yourself from my poll. :)
aren't the first 3 games much more meaningful? I'm assuming everyone gives a W vs the Zips

We’ll need Mike Stoops to have a similar game plan to beat OU again.

I rewatched this game yesterday. I remembered OU getting a lot of penalties, but they were also completely undisciplined and dirty. Constantly hitting our guys after the whistle, shoving heads into the ground, jumping on piles, etc. They had zero respect for us, but I got the sense this was just how they operate every week. They have a ton of talent, and they had Baker. That's going to win a lot of games. But if they carry that same attitude into this season, I wouldn't be surprised to see them drop 2-3 games.

We won because our guys kept their cool and stuck to the game plan. I know Lincoln Riley has a lot of hype, and Iove his offense, but I'm not convinced he's the savior they think he is. I'll be interested to see how quickly that fanbase turns on him if they lose a couple this year.

Welp, that was longer than I intended.

I agree with all of that.

I assume OU cannot play that badly on defense again and that last year we caught OU off guard given the context. But like you, I don’t think it was exactly isolated to the Iowa St game. The last time we saw OU they had some Wayne Bolt era breakdowns against UGa.

I’m glad we get OU early though.. Getting SDSU first game will be a good test to stop the run as they will run and a lot.

As for Iowa.. slow down the run and cover TE and RBs out of backfield. 80% of their O seems to be short passes to them..

Not afraid of Iowa D at all
