Why has ISU all of a sudden been thrown out of these "talks" about the "New Big East?" There was a contingency plan put in place with the "forgotten five" in KC.

Because there is no more "5". The Pac10 plan called for UT,TTU,OU and OSU. That plan no longer exists.

If conference realignment seriously hits again the Big East will fall right along with the Big 12. I don't know why people think some Big 12 teams will end up in the Big East. If we have 4-16 team super conferences then the Pac10, Big 10, SEC and ACC will be the only BCS conferences still standing.

"At the same time, ESPN has taken the position that superconferences are bad for its business, as they would also drive up rights fees. That’s why they were willing to step in and aid in saving the Big 12 by paying the same amount for a 10-team conference without a championship game as a 12-team conference with a championship game. The new UT network effectively ensures that the school will stay in the Big 12 for at least the next 20 years. With UT off the market, the Big Ten, Pac-10/12 and SEC are going to have a difficult time to financially justify expanding past 12. So, ESPN’s $15 million per year for the UT network is insurance against having to spend literally hundreds of millions of dollars in extra fees for superconferences. The ESPN UT network is likely going to profitable by itself (as with only one mouth to feed, it will take a fairly low basic cable subscriber rate across the state of Texas to make money), but preventing other conference networks and superconferences from forming is where ESPN is getting the most value of all."

Where would KU go?

That's a good question. This whole thing seems like nothing but rumors but the fact that we lost 2 schools already lets you know that things can happen. I would love for the Big 12 to remain as a 10 team conference forever. I really like the format for both football and basketball. It makes the schedule very tough in football but it should help the recruiting because your Texas players are going to play in Texas twice a year every year. But I heard about the advantages of 4 - 16 team super conferences over a year ago and I could see where this could end up a real possibility. If it happens they would form their own governing body and that would be KU's only real chance of being a school the conferences would be interested in because then they would have their own Basketball Tournament and basketball would gain some value. Right now the NCAA funds their entire operation from the NCAA tourney and that takes a ton of money away from the schools and devalues the basketball schools. Hopefully this will never happen, I really like 10 schools.
