I'd say the fact that SR being on pace for 55 TDs and having all those yards and the issue still being a tossup with a guy who's starting his 3rd game on Saturday transcends a few things too.

The thing is, it's not actually a toss up. It's cut and dry.

I'd say this entire argument is completely stupid. If you could surround both players with the same roster and call the same plays then you could decide who is better. Sam is better than Rohach. Beathard is better than Rudock. Too many other variables to objectively compare Sam to Beathard without making a ton of useless assumptions/opinions, none of which make you any more right or make this conversation any more valuable.

Stupid arguments are stupid.

So in your opinion this whole thread is stupid. I think I agree.

I think that says more about ISU's history than it does about this conversation.

Hawk fans never cease to make me laugh.

Quarterbacks are an area you should probably just be quiet. Of course, you don't get that. And thats funny.

This thread is ridiculous! Sam has literally carried us at times! He's been our leading rusher (he's had to run for his life) and has at times had no time at all to make throws. He's still put up decent numbers. I would love to see what he could do if he had time to throw or more room to run.

Beathard has had a solid line in front of him with a running game to help, but less play makers outside.

That said, would take Richardson any day of the week.

I'd rather see Beater. A gunslinger playing away from home in his first big time game is a recipe for ~50% passing with 3 INT's.

Lol I'd gladly bet on that. Beathard is in the Stanzi mold. He's able to shake off a bad play. Rudock would dwell on his mistakes and let it affect his game.

No one is ignoring that Stanzi had very good defenses. I agree that judging QB's solely on W-L record is not a very good metric as very good teams can let an average QB have a good record.

But I'd say Stanzi was a superior QB to Sam B Richardson. Stanzi averaged 8.1 yards per attempt in college, Richardson has averaged 6.2 yards per attempt to date. Stanzi's career QB rating was 141.6. Richardson's is 121.1 for his career. Those aren't the be-all, end-all of QB stats but they are ways to compare QB's who played in different offenses and were asked to do different things.

But to this weekend's matchup. Richardson clearly has the longer track record. Beathard is making his 3rd career start. How those 2 play will go a long way to determining who wins.

Edit: I'm an idiot

Not exactly sure.
Okay I don't mean to critic you too much here because I agree with your point in your first paragraph. In the second, you mention yards per attempt. Sacks is factored into that, and when you look at Iowa's offensive lines at the time vs ISU's offensive lines now, there is a pretty big difference. Sam got sacked a whole lot more than Stanzi did. it kind of goes against what you were saying in the first paragraph which is why I brought it up. Other than that we agree.

Sacks are are negative rushing yards in college, not passing.

BTW, I'd take Sam without a hesitation, and everybody knows I feel Sam has some major things that need fixing. Beat hard hasn't had to worry about things, when you are the backup, you're the favorite player on the hawk roster. When the game is on your shoulders, most will change a decent amount.

I think you're the one that's confused.

Your point inferred that being the all time touchdown leader at ISU wasn't good enough to establish a QB as better than Beathard, which is absurd. Iowa's all time leader is irrelevant, as is everything that Gonzo cited.

The gap between a 55 touchdown career with over 7,000 yards and a guy with 2 or 3 starts says a hell of a lot more than the fact that ISU's leading passer has 50 passing TDs. Maybe if the record was like 20.

SR is statistically similar to Stanzi. So using him as a comparison removes the homer bias and allows you to make a pick without playing favorites.

The fact of the matter is, there is no reasonable argument for Beathard over Stanzi or Richardson.

I DIDN'T TRY TO MAKE AN ARGUMENT FOR BEATHARD!!!!!!!!

At no point in the post that you're questioning did I mention beathard. I think it's a pretty stupid argument to be honest. One guy is a senior who is starting for his third year and the other guy is a junior who is in his first year as a starter. It's a dumb argument to have regardless, but it's borderline mentally handicapped argument to have when one guy has started 3 games.

actually, I should apologize to the mentally handicapped. It's insulting to insinuate that they'd have an argument this freaking stupid.

If Sam finishes the year with 55 TD and over 7,000 yards like projected, but if Beathard throws 15 TD and Iowa ends the year 9-3, I'll take the W's over the yards. Cut and dry.

This "analysis" is mind-numbingly stupid.

If Iowa wins 9 games and Beathard scores 15 TDs, and Sam bombs 55 TDs and we lose a bunch of games do't you think that maybe, just maybe, there are things other than QB play leading to these outcomes?

People ascribing wins to QBs makes me want break things. Football is the ultimate team game. QBs aren't winners. They aren't losers. There are 21 guys out there who have to do their job for this thing to win. Ricky Stanzi didn't win Iowa all those games in 2009. Ricky Stanzi and 21 other guys did. Sam Richardson didn't go 0-15 in those Big 12 games. Sam Richardson and 21 other guys did.
