1. Phillips was a McD guy
2. All of those guys were way, way more highly rated than this kid and all had better offers.
3. Hoiberg recruited all of those guys at the very beginning of his stint at ISU, when ISU had little national clout. We have far more now.

You can't just look back in hindsight and compare apples to oranges.

You're looking back and judging good prospects who didn't work out and justifying signing a pretty average P5 prospect.

Of course, no ratings or prior events matter for a kids career, but highly rated kids pan out more than lowly rated ones and vice versa, it's a fact.

I know higher ranked players are more likely to pan out. EVERYONE know this. I never even said I thought he would be good. My point was that it's not a big deal if he doesn't pan out. He'll just transfer like those other players and not take up a scholarship.

He's going to not play at all this year, and then maybe play a little next year and then a lot the next year, in an ideal world, right?

So that's at least 2 and maybe 3 year of scholarships taken up for nothing if he doesn't pan out.

Players not being good is a big deal no matter how you slice it. It's an opportunity cost.

I hope he turns out to be a good player for us but I think this is mainly due to a desperate need for post depth next year. I do not think he had any other outstanding offers (haven't read the whole thread so I apologize if this has been discussed).

The UNI offer expired after they recieved 2 post commits and ran out of scholarships. Florida Gulf coast and Bowling green dropped the offer after the injury.

Doesnt mean he can't be good though.

Not sure what to think of this? Why use up a schollie on a walk-on level player?

I think Ashton easily deserves a schollie if Ernst is getting one.

I hope Ernst understands going in that if he doesn't pan out that he could get his scholarship yanked?

Why not just save this scholly for next year? Surely this isnt the best we can do. A completely unranked guy who even midmajors walked away from. Doesnt seem like a good idea. Guy needs to get a sweet tribal tattoo and become our own ryan spangler

Because we are going to still have 6-7 spots to fill. Next year is going to be an absurdly large class.

I both expect him to never play or transfer, and I am happy they have him as a practice player this year.

Maybe it is just me, but honestly, this kid is better than what I thought ISU might be able to get this late in the game. It would have been great to have Williams, but Ernst will have to do, plus I doubt Prohm and crew are done yet. There is just not a lot to pick from this late.......you are not going to land some 4 or 5 star guy this late unless something falls through at the other school like it did for NN. Relax......ISU did not need much for next year.

For those of you who are criticizing this pickup before you have even seen him play......show us how smart you are and go to the one of the many transfer lists out there and tell us who you would rather ISU had gotten that would have been available immediately. Put yourself in the position of the coach.....we'll wait for your lists.

Level-headed and intelligent post. Thank you.

Color me skeptical. Hopefully it works out but he is clearly the lowest recruited guy we have gotten in years.

Doesn't prevent him from being a good player for us of course.

I'd have preferred any transfer or a JUCO.

It seems like a 4 year scholly commitment to have a practice body, which Prohm was talking about a lot.
Edozie never had any other offer from anyone. He made sense and played an important role that helped us win though. We need those guys too.

He was also only a 2 year commitment and we got his JR and SR years without him taking a scholarship up his FR and SO years. He contributed his first year.

Apples to oranges.

I'll give prohm a pass on this one. But if we recruit any more white kids from iowa I'm jumping off the wagon.

Fran is also bad at scouting talent, so I don't know who to trust.

Fran liking him makes me want him less.

Kidding of course. As said before, this is a no-lose situation for us. I, for one, believe he will contribute here at some point in his career. Good size and athleticism.

My thoughts exactly!
Homan had at least 30 pounds on this guy. So not they are not alike. I like the pick any way because you need another big to practice with. Red shirt him this year and see how he develops. If he isn't making progress towards minutes he will look for them elsewhere. That is the current world for basketball.

This is a no-lose situation for Iowa State. ISU had two scholarship openings, which meant 2 practice bodies missing from the team. As it stands, ISU is still pocketing one of the scholarships. If he doesn't work out, he "transfers out" to seek more playing time and the scholarship is back on the table.

I don't agree at all.

Bank the scholarship and use it on whoever you want. An impact transfer, a JUCO, another high school guy, whatever.

This kid is going to sit on the bench this year, maybe play some next year if we are lucky? And maybe get decent minutes his JR year. There's no reason to spend the scholly unless TJ think's he's a legit player.

Prohm's talk about finding a practice body concerns me and it's (of course) absurd to waste a scholarship on a guy just for a practice body. That is inarguable.
