A certain segment of we fans will be disappointed regardless of who the next coach is; that is, one guy is not the favorite of all. Whoever the guy is, even if I'm not overly enthused about him, I'll get in line behind him (within reason; if it's Chizik, I'm gone ;-)

Fans loved the Chizik hire (disaster), hated the idea of Brian Kelly being hired, liked the McDermott hire (disaster), hated the Rhoads hire (worked for the first few years), very skeptical about the Hoiberg hire (home run), and LOVED the Mangino hire (disaster).

Who gives a **** what fans think? Let's get the right guy.

Other guy who I think is prob at the very top of JP list is Matt Wells, Utah St. Wells is young...HC...his offenses are usually top 25 ish but Utah st defense previous seasons have been very good. He's a juco recruiter. His brother is Luke Wells who was on staff under CPR and was maybe CPR best recruiter at that time. Luke was the TE coach under CPR..remember before the ku game CPR was asked about David Beaty coming to ISU as an asst and CPR said they hired someone else? Well that was Luke Wells. And there is a reason why CPR said they made the right hire...because Luke Wells can recruit. Brought in Ernst Brun, Franklin, EJ Bibbs I believe. A Wimberly. Luke was the WR and TE coach for few years here. We had some damn good TEs that's for sure. Any way...Id bet a lot that Matt Wells is arguably JP top choice right now..just a guess. There's that "knows ISU" connection with Luke. I think a staff of Matt and Luke, along with maybe Ayeni would be a pretty good recruiting staff to start. Matt Wells is known for being a tireless recruiter.

Josh Heupel is his QB coach and Co-Offensive Coordinator this season. Maybe he would bring him along?

The more I think about it the harder it is to really determine who can win at ISU, because it has not happened.

At first I really wanted a guy that had a ton of experience winning games, but it has to be against equal or greater talent. Someone who uses their brains to win. A lot of Coaches simply win a lot of games that are gimme's against teams that are just not coached well. We need an instinctive coach that doesn't need a sheet to tell them how to manage a game.

Then I think that players win games, and that we need a recruiter. Someone who can bring in talent.

I am kind of leaning towards a recruiter like Alford or Frost. Someone to bring in some players.

Tough Coaching search for JP. he has to get this one right. he talks about preserving a culture that Rhoads was desperate to change.

I share your take on Alford. He seems like he brings the best of several aspects to the job.

ISU ties but he also has been a part of winning programs, hell of a recruiter (was Notre Dame's lead recruiter and almost stole away Lazard), and his experience on great staffs should enable him to bring in some better coordinators and assistants than some of the MAC guys or Stitt would bring in.

I'm the opposite. I want a current head coach who has won a **** load of games. We are well suited for a decent season next year and while recruiting is important, if that person can win right away it will make recruiting that much easier. We've tried the up-and-coming assistant coach before and he put together a staff that was dog ****. I don't want someone learning on the fly how to be a head coach when we have the talent to compete next year.

Athlon Sports article on potential candidates said Fritz was the first person ISU should call. There is a difference between leaking you have interest vs. leaking you have talked to ISU about the job...

Is it just me or is this coaching search a lot more tight lipped? I keep checking to see what the new development is and there is not a thing. Maybe im just being impatient, but I feel like the moment Fred was fired to the moment we hired Prohm we were constantly being fed a new rumor somebody heard (accurate or not). Jeremy, one example for instance, would post some pretty lengthy updates almost nightly about the new happenings. That isn't the case so far.

I want rumorz!

Because I don't think anything has even happened. It's a holiday weekend. I don't think we are a thing until maybe Sunday.

I suppose that makes some sense. So it is my own lack of patience is what you are telling me. I guess I can go back to being productive at work for the day.

Dodd's article has to make it seem that he's at least a candidate - man I hope so. Parker (the search firm) is also helping in search for Georgia Southern's new President. Fritz would be a hire I could really get behind, experienced proven WINNER, innovative coaching mind - he hasn't always been option, much more balanced in previous stops

Wells has been my favorite since the new coach threads started after the Toledo game. He also has Josh Heupel as Co-OC with Luke so that's a plus. Heupel was a rising star at OU as Co-OC until OU crapped the bed last year and Stoops canned him. Having that Big 12 experience can't hurt.

I wouldn't be surprised if we interview candidates over the holiday weekend. If JP has his guy already picked out and the interviews go well, I could see a new coach announced early next week.

I think my current short-list of favorites are:

1) Matt Wells
2) Matt Campbell
3) Willie Fritz

Also under consideration: Scott Frost, PJ Fleck, Jeff Brohm

Really dark horse: Lance Leipold

Well Brohm might top my list actually but I don't think he would consider ISU. He will get a bigger gig and soon. Brohm is a great coach. Might be the best QB recruiter/developer of the bunch.

Here nor there
I'll pass on the "recruiter", at least how most use that term. A good head coach that knows how to put together and execute a plan for a program will make sure he has a staff that can identify the raw talent that he can develop and utilize.

I think that's just because Rhoads is still in office this week, and we have a game to play. As soon as the game ends, I expect things to move fast, with lots of rumors and leaks.

Football Scoop reporting that Tom Herman is not going to South Carolina, and that he will stay at Houston unless the Texas job opens.

And if we are targeting sitting head coaches, those guys are preparing for games this weekend. So things might not go as quickly as they do in the off season.
