He wanted to give being an NBA coach a try. No recruiting, more scheming at the highest level.

I don’t think making 5 million for 5 as opposed to making what he could have made in college has any influence as to whether this is his last coaching job or not. Hence, he’s not coaching the Bulls because of the money.

He is at the Bulls so he can learn coaching in the NBA and go to the Wolves when Tibs is fired.

John Paxson sucks yes...but it's the Gar Forman suckiness that has connected the Cyclones to the Bull ineptness.

The Bulls were actually too good for a stretch last year. They thought they would tank, and then Mirotic went nuts and they won a surprising amount of games. So that’s actually a plus for Fred, I think. The Jimmy Butler stuff doesn’t seem like a big deal anymore because Jimmy is a bit crazy. And I don’t know how much Fred was involved, but that Butler for Lavine, Dunn, and a pick that turned into Markkanen doesn’t seem as lopsided as it did at that time.

You give him Markkanen, Dunn, and Portis back and watch this team make a run in the 2nd half.

If he could have gotten 5 mill a year to be a GM he would have done that over coaching is what I'm saying. He had/has zero intentions of coaching past his 5 year contract no matter what happened

I've stated that the 'rock star' status he couldn't escape in Ames was part of Fred's desire to leave. He's never struck me as being much of an extravert in my very limited interactions. So endless fan interaction probably grew old as well.

I'm glad he did well here. I think he could have won it all if he stayed...if Georges doesn't get hurt he wins it all that year honestly. But I get it.

I hope he ends up NBA front office and not in another college job.

In hindsight, Fred would of probably been better off waiting one more year then taking the Timberwolves Job, but no one could of known Flip was going to pass away at that time.

I am not so sure about that.

KAT and Wiggins are not proving the building blocks we thought they probably were a few years ago. KAT is soft, and Wiggins is just mediocre.

You just described college football.

Yeah, but in college football, every team's fans adjust their expectations accordingly to the talent and tradition of their roster. Alabama would cry bloody hell about a 9-3 season, and Iowa State would be ecstatic and try to lock Campbell up for life.

Professional sports are so much more championship or bust because, for the most part, or at least outside of baseball in sports with at least some concept of a salary cap, reverse draft, and free agency, all franchises can work their way to winning one.

Even baseball has more parity now than in the past. The lack of parity is not devastating to enjoying a sport because what you are expecting out of it changes. The EPL is the least competitively balanced league imaginable, yet still immensely popular.

I blame Michael Jordan for this, especially in basketball --

He won six and never lost a Finals, so everybody is judged against that, even if it is absurd. Tom Brady going 5-3 in the Super Bowl is more impressive.

Getting there eight times is better than six. Period, even if two were loses.

College football is much more interesting than the NBA.

I get all if my NBA info from ESPN. I don't watch at all.

I predict Warriors vs Celtics in the finals.

I agree, Alabama vs Clemson should be a fresh new match up we haven’t seen before.

Anyway, lots of salty ass fans in here. Really sad if you can’t support one of Iowa state’s greatest athletes in progressing at the highest levels of his profession. He didn’t sign a lifetime contract here and he doesn’t owe Iowa state a lifetime of work here either. The man has already given more to Iowa State basketball than any other individual in the school’s history and some of you are mad at him for not giving more? I continue to wish him the best.

I don't begrudge Fred for leaving or for getting paid. And I will always root for him; he's a huge figure in ISU sports history.

But a year from now, I can't imagine he'll still be the Bulls' coach. He hasn't had the talent to win but I don't think he's won over many skeptics, either.

People are salty because he left the cupboards bare. If he loved Iowa State you'd think he wouldn't give up for the next guy. He's not a coach that leaves and doesn't care about where he left.

The Bulls have been close in most games with a fairly poor roster and their best player hurt. I would be surprised if he gets canned already, especially with how his teams have improved in the 2nd half each year.

You don’t have to be a coach to be a GM. He was already on a fast rack in MInnesota’s front office to being a GM before coming to ISU. Not looking to argue about what Fred wanted.
Argue with Fran, just reporting what he said. Do not disagree with your comments, but it’s possible Fran has better sources than either of us, me for sure.

He's just another ex-coach. We enjoyed some successes together, we both got something out of the affair - let's all shake hands, wish each other good luck in future endeavors and focus our efforts on the current basketball program as there is LOADS to be thrilled about.

That's basically what he made himself into in the end.

Exactly, it was mutually beneficial. Fred did great things for ISU as a player and coach. But there seems to be some portion of the fan base that acts like he was making some sacrifice being here. ISU gave him a P5 job when he wasn't sniffing a mid major gig any time soon. He got the raises and extensions with zero hometown discount. In exchange we got very good, exciting, consistent basketball for years and a return to prominence after a bad era. Fred doesn't owe ISU any more. ISU doesn't owe Fred any more.

They've had unrealistic expectations every since Jordan retired.

They’ve pretty much sucked since Jordan retired with the exception of a few years when they lucked into Derrick rose. Do you think their fans should expect to be terrible?
