How far will the bench extend?

I'm not saying Long plays at all either, simply pointing out that people saying lewis and McNeil play before him base does on basically nothing is premature.

That is fair, I'm just putting what I hear with the circumstantial evidence we can gather. If Long was a sure thing, the staff wouldn't be looking so hard at all different types of wings. I'm not writing him off, one doesn't have to look far for a Long to show massive improvements from freshman to sophomore years.

What do you expect the staff to do? Leave scholarships open?

Use your head. Good coaches recruit over good players. That's how you get better, quit being content with mediocrity.

You missed my point so badly I'm unsure how to respond rusty.

Like everyone else, I think Wig, NWB, Jackson, and Young are all pretty much locks to start unless we land another impact wing.

If Brase is healthy I believe he starts over Beverly and I think McNeil will play over Long.
Like everyone esle? Not. There's no lock written in stone at this point. We have a couple of high probability players but I wouldn't go any further than that until half or more of the pre-season played.

The days of banking scholarship are pretty much over with the graduate transfer rule. There is only upside by bringing in a grad transfer wing. At worst, an additional practice body and insurance in case of injury or lack of player development. At best we find a kid who can play significant minutes.

I said "pretty much lock" which is synonymous with "high probability". I think you wrapped your agreement with disagreeing language, unless you think someone else has a higher probability of starting.

Ideally, guys are good enough to expand the bench beyond 8, but they probably won't get there.

Looking at Brase, Beverly, and Lard...I think an reasonable expectation would be that two of them are rotation players. Grad transfers don't always work out, and young bigs don't always work out. Ideally, all 4 would be in the rotation, but realistically we're talking about 3.

In the guard court, Wigginton, Jackson, and NWB are definitely going to play, and then I think you have two out of McNeill, Lewis, Long, and any guard we add.

Perhaps I should have said there's a high probability all starting positions are pretty much wide open. There's no longer a Monte Morris or Deonte Burton we all knew would start.

Oh I guess I just plain disagree. There isn't a high probability all starting positions are open, imo.

No big deal.

If I know CF, if you go back to this time last year, there were probably quite a few that didn't expect Burton to start because of the whole 6'4" guy playing the 4 position thing.

With so many unknowns, this team needs competition. No one has earned anything yet. This is what is so different this year and it is what should be so exciting if we let it.

I don't think Babb is a lock to start. He looks good out there. But his shooting last season wasn't good enough and sometimes he struggles making simple mistakes. I definitely hope he gets things going. But time will tell.

Point well taken. Not many thought Solomon Young would break out at the end of the year either. I mean, you know, Solomon a freshman lol.

I appreciate people's opinions including yours. We all have a common thread to wish our players and coach a successful season. I personally don't have a clue who's going to break out and start by Big 12 season. I wish I did. All I really have to offer is I love our coach, I love our players, and I love the unknown for the 2017-2018 basketball season. I won't have much else unless we lock down another transfer or the season begins.

Thank you to everybody for the content in this thread. Most of it is idle speculation, but I find it enjoyable nonetheless. That is why we are here.

I think we all know that Prohm will play "long" early in the year given how many new people we have to evaluate, and then tighten up to 7-8 by January.

Pretty much how everybody does it.

We will see which 7.5 men make that "cut."

I expect NWB to start when season begins, and if someone performs above his level, he could be shifted to 6th man or still start and just have reduced minutes or rotate to the bench earlier in games. Hopefully if someone takes his slot, it's because they've improved and not because he digresses (and I have no reason to expect him to slide).
