I’m on record when TJ was hired that I did not like the hire at all. I had several reasons for that opinion.

However, after watching the game last night, I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. Still too early to say if it was the right hire, but fundamentally the basketball was 10x better than anything I ever saw out of Prohm’s teams.

We all have to remember that he’s also working with a shell of a roster.

Completely agree with all of this. Although it wasn't that I didn't like the hire just wasn't sure about it. Agree about being pleasantly surprised and its way too early but the basketball was a lot easier to watch....

and yeah I', not judging too much based on the roster and results just want to see competent basketball and effort and in that regards the team certainly achieved that last night

Totally agree, having Hunter get in foul trouble and then have to close out a somewhat close game with 4 is extremely valuable to his development. Also Tre Jackson played some good minutes when Hunter was on the bench.
Tre played a pretty good backup PG role last night offensively. Defensively he struggled but 99% of that was because how our coaches wanted him to play, and his execution of that game plan. They wanted him playing passing lanes, guarding his guy full court, and pressuring up top. He kept over extending himself leading to that little PG getting into the lane to draw fouls / shoot layups or kick to open guys.

That stuff will get ironed out on film. Know when and when not to take risks, and don’t over extend for straight line drives.

Also a side note: Caleb Grill is going to be awesome. That kid’s a totally different player than two years ago from a skill standpoint and a body standpoint. He has a heck of a motor and it was awesome seeing him knock down a few 3’s.

We had 16 assists on 27 made field goals. We averaged around 11 assists and 24 field goals per game last year. Kennesaw State only had 6 assists on 20 field goals made, last year our opponents averaged 13 assists and 27 field goals made. VERY small sample size obviously, but it's good to see us moving the ball on offense and creating tough, contested shots that aren't in the flow of the offense for our opponents.

That Kennesaw team was more formidable than I expected. I knew Small was there, and that their coach was seen as a big win for them ( Shareef Abdur-Rahim's brother) had been a asst coach at top P5 level, and had a few surprising recruiting wins already.

That being said, we should always beat teams like that, and we took their punches and held our ground. I like to see some of our guys can get hot. Hunter, although fouls essentially cut his game in half, still had a good impact on the game while he was in. Positive first game for him and his confidence.
Zay and Kaulsher are no doubt our leaders, we go as their defensive effort goes at this point.

The confusing part is the wording “being 0-1 where it counts”. Winning is the only thing that counts.
Any person who bets on their favorite team is asking to be disappointed. I've stayed away from it since I started gambling, even when I'm confident in a cover or ML win.

There were certainly some good signs. Obviously need to guard without fouling better but I do love the depth we seem to have.

There was one play late in the 2nd half where there was a series of passes and cuts that led to a baseline drive and layup by Kalschuer and I thought "holy **** that looked like real basketball." Crisp passing and cutting with purpose.

If nothing else a good start.

That being said, if he turns out to be a flop I can see this thread being bumped for years to come

The unbearable level of shame people would feel for being excited about a new coach and a new era after a good first game would just be too much. How dare they.

We all have to remember that he’s also working with a shell of a roster. We were supposed to have Javan Johnson, Hinson, and Foster too. Do you think that might have helped some? Uhhhh…. yes.

This team will likely not win many games this year IMO, but it doesn’t look like to me that it will be because they aren’t well coached and playing good fundamental basketball…. they just don’t have the horses yet.

As for some individuals….

Hunter- most talented player on the team. He’s special folks.

Brockington- best player on the team. Will lead us in scoring and will be the go-to guy.

Grill- I was impressed with him last night.

Conditt- looks like the same Conditt to me, hope he proves me wrong.

as am I. Mainly because of the way it happened.

I came around to the idea of him being the coach months ago though and im on board with him. he has brought a little energy and excitement, although I think any new higher would have.

they play hard, though and thats all i can ask for.

Can't tell you how pleased I was to see defensive effort, rebounding effort, players sharing the ball on offense.

Basketball is back!
Agree. My one game observations:
1) great energy and ball movement
2) aggressive D
3) obviously, too many fouls, but better than passive
4) seemed to know what we were doing on both ends
5) Hunter is the real deal
6) as expected, the two senior big 10 transfers lead our scoring. Probably will all year
7) Tre Jackson was my player of the game
8) Grill looked strong and fast
9) Kunc and Enaruna are not players / sorry
10) Jones probably not P5
11) disappointed in Conditt. He got a lot of praise, but I thought he still looked weak. I had high hopes for him this year and was a big George cheerleader.
12) impressed with Otz
13) Kennesaw played really hard - kudos

Summary: played hard with energy. Good movement and teamwork. Organized.
Guards pretty good in total, bigs well below average.

Friday will tell us a lot.

Why didn't Walker play? Sorry if this has been discussed? I couldn't find any topic discussing Walker.

Coaches decision, that is all that was said.
I assume that means dog house.
I am going to assume it means he isn't quite ready. Give it some time. Everyone who played last night (sans Enaruna and Kunc) were making mistakes at blazing speed. We need him to stop overthinking (Prohm coaching tendency) and play faster imo.

I like how we were aggressive on defense but it's going to be rough if we keep committing that many fouls and making the game last over 2 hours. Made a comment last night I felt like we were watching a West Virginia game and whoever had the game next after us will be pissed like we are when we follow them if our games are going to drag on like that. We also aren't deep enough to be getting our best players in early foul trouble too. They played through it fairly well last night despite it but also have to consider the level of competition too as a better Big 12 school would likely go on a run if 2 or 3 of our best guys had to sit out for significant stretches.

I like the effort and intensity they showed last night. I've always supported our team regardless who was coaching and my expectations are so low for this season that as long as we show that kind of energy and effort like we did last night I'll be content while we rebuild this thing. With the roster turnover we have had the past few years seems like we just had a lot of bad apples in the locker room and TJ is not going to tolerate that so will be fun to watch this group grow and play as a team for a change.
