If you have two QB’s, then you have none…. as the saying goes.
We could always do what the Cowboys did in 1971 with Craig Morton and Roger Staubach, and instead of signaling the play calls in from the sideline, just have Rocco and JJ alternate snaps and bring the play in themselves from the sideline every time. Guaranteed you won’t mess up the play call in translation that way! Win-win!

Since we have a RS freshman and a true freshman battling for the number one QB job, I like the idea of both guys playing early in the season. Since they are both young, the guy that wins could potentially be our guy at QB the next four years. Once one of them is named the starter and the other one is not playing, the gap between the two will likely widen. CMC needs to get this right and make sure we end up with the right guy as our QB.
Yes, and if it is deemed that JJ isn't ready as a true freshman for the job with the new rules he can preserve his redshirt after getting his shot.

He has a talented and experienced guy at the most important position on the field, vs ISU who has two unknowns. Why not be confident?

I think it is critical to roll up 300 yards rushing AND actually score touchdowns in this game. Dominate and make sure to keep the momentum. Futzing around and keeping it close is a recipe for that QB to make a play.
Idk about 300 yards, but if Iowa State does not control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, we may well see them lose. The stats bear out how even these games have been statistically over the past couple of decades. I don't know about UNI's other skill positions, but they almost certainly have a leg up on us at the important one, at least at this point in the season. If we just go out and do what we have normally done against UNI the last few matchups, and we don't dominate the LOS, we will lose.

I think Iowa State needs to come out and run the triple option. What do they have to lose? You protect young, inexperienced QBs and just run it down their throats. UNI was not ready for it against Air Force in their first game last year and got killed. 582 yards rushing at 9.4 per clip. Why not take a page out of their book and just lay it on the Panthers?

Yeah, make the players learn an entire offense for one game. Brilliant!

People spin themselves in circles going from "depth charts don't matter" to "this depth chart is dumb because it has ORs on it" to "why isn't Coach XYZ releasing a depth chart?"

Like clockwork.

I’m not sure that “buried on the depth chart” is an apt descriptor at the moment. It’s not even the first game, the roster (and especially position) is very much in flux—and CMC usually plays quite a few wideouts throughout the season.

And I would expect Coach Langes to have run just about everyone through punt and kickoff return drills, especially since he’s new here. Me? I’d really like to see what the likes of Eli Sanders and Abu Sama could do on KO returns.
I am not speaking of any player in particular, but I would imagine at this point with game prep, we have players that are on the scout team to simulate the looks UNI will give us. If I had already red-shirted, like a RSFM, I would be working with the punters as much as possible and asking to be looked at again for punt returner. I also agree that one of the really fast running backs should be tried at KO return to create the possibility of a huge return.

If this UNI QB is being hyped as a future NFL sure thing, how come he transferred to a non-P5 program? Lots of D-1 teams could use an NFL ready QB talent and apparently Farley pulled a fast one. I’m not buying it.

Good thing UNI is a DI program then...
