Is McDermott's job security in danger

I know he's not a coach. My statement is that his record at Iowa State is better then Greg's and we fired him.

Again, I don't think you need to be that great of a COACH to win basketball games. If you give me 5 McD's all Americans and you give GMac our starting 5, I'm winning that game 9 times out of 10. It's about recruiting and right now we are bringing goats to the Kentucky Derby.

Spot on!

Oh well, what the hell, I'll throw some more fuel on the fire. Give LE these current players and we don't lose to Hawaii or Drake.

I think it is hard to say what is job security is right now. Needless to say we have been less than spectacular so far with Mac leading the team but...
1. Look what he started with
2. Injuries and player leaving galore
3. Pollard hired him so he will give him time to prove he made the right choice.
4. Hard to imagine us getting as good of a coach as Mac.

Goats....wow...now that's supportive. Perhaps if the 'horses' under our previous coach developed or improved a little more?
The best athlete we've had under WM left the program without ever developing the offensive skills to get him to the NBA. I'll admit that McD taught him to play solid defense by the time he left, however. I think most people would agree that WM was an incredible recruiter and great guy, but the superlatives end there.

I don't know what that means.

I wish I didn't either but alas mandm are the only sports radio covering local sports on the radio.

I'd like to say I switch over to 1700 during slow news times but those seem few and far between when u are a fan of isu.

for a while it was entertaining to hear them tee off on EIUs off the field problems. But then they turned their attention to ISU fball when it appeared eiu was bowl bound and they wanted to kiss some arse so they could go.

I find it funny we have "Cyclone fans" demanding instant gratification (i.e., winning is everything). Seriously? I think you are on the wrong site.

Most Cyclone fans agree Johnny Orr was one of the greatest coaches in ISU history. If we had held him to the three year standard of those calling for McD's head now, he would have been fired, and we would never have witnessed Hilton Magic.

Year Record
1980-1981 9-18
1981-1982 10-17
1982-1983 13-15
1983-1984 16-13
1984-1985 21-13
1985-1986 22-11
1986-1987 13-15
1987-1988 20-12
1988-1989 17-12
1989-1990 10-18
1990-1991 12-19
1991-1992 21-13
1992-1993 20-11
1993-1994 14-13

Building a program the right way (especially when you start from scratch) takes time. Just ask the catalyst for Hilton Magic. If you don't like waiting (i.e., you need to win now), please go to the KU/UNC/Duke sites.

The program was in far better shape when McD took over then it was when Orr took over. You can't compare the two at all. That would be neglecting 20+ years of basketball and all the changes Iowa State has been through since then.

.

Who wants instant gratification? How about a season above .500? That can't be too much to ask. Iowa State has been a fine basketball program over the better part of 20 years. To expect winning seasons and the occasional NCAA birth is not out of line. Thanks to Johnny Orr, we should have expectations.

Seriously? I was quite a bit younger when Johnny took over, but I sure don't recall him having to put together an entire team in the late signing season of his first year. I don't think people appreciate how difficult that is to do or how far that sets back a program.
