Is this years' team better than we thought?

Well, judging by how Iowa came out in the 2nd half and kicked the **** out of Minnesota I think they are really good, even though we like to diminish our rival.
Minnesota has lost 5 Big 10 games in a row and 6 out of 8 dating back to last year. I wouldn't give Iowa too much credit for beating them.

Hypothetical "When We Play Them" Prediction because I'm bored at work (If you're mad about anything in here, deal with it):

@ Houston (1-3): Not going to sugarcoat it. Houston is just not very good. Holgerson left Fritz with a very bare cupboard and Fritz is trying to pick up the pieces. Looking at their schedule, they may be lucky to win two games this year. I really hope we're not one of them, but this "should" be a comfortable victory. Iowa State 34 - Houston 17

Baylor (3-2):
First off, give me the Baylor Bears in an upset at home this week against a BYU team coming off a very big high last week. Baylor then comes back down to earth when they come to Ames for a WHITE OUT game under the lights. Iowa State 30 - Baylor 17

@ West Virginia (2-3):
West Virginia will lose in Stillwater next week and OSU will be coming off a loss in Manhattan this week. This is going to be a tough one, but the Mountaineers will be in their gauntlet of their season in playing KU, OSU, ISU and KSU 4 games straight. Iowa State goes into Morgantown and steals a close one in a barn burner. Iowa State 38 - West Virginia 35

#25 UCF (5-1):
UCF brings their high powered offense into Jack Trice and gets their first taste of The Wizard Jon Heacock. The under hits big time in this one and Iowa State stays undefeated. Iowa State 17 - UCF 14

Texas Tech (5-3): This is likely going to be Texas Tech's hardest game on their entire schedule. Going into Jack Trice against an undefeated Iowa State team on homecoming does not bode well for the Red Raiders. Iowa State 31 - Texas Tech 10

Kansas (4-4):
At the beginning of the year, KU was talked about as a team that's going to compete for a conference title. That has been the opposite as they've looked poor so far. There's going to be some buzz this game as it'll be in Arrowhead, but Iowa State fans bring Trice South to Kansas City and keeps the wheels turning. Iowa State 27 - Kansas 20

Cincinnati (4-5): Again, this is going to be the toughest game on Cincinnati's schedule. It's in Ames against a rolling Cyclones squad. Iowa State embarrasses the Bearcats. Iowa State 41 - Cincinnati 10

#5 Utah (10-0): An undefeated Utah takes on an undefeated Iowa State under the lights in a top-10 matchup and College Gameday in appearance. Utah prevails at home comfortably. Iowa State 13 - Utah 27

#13 Kansas State (9-2): Kansas State comes into Ames at night in a game to go to the Big 12 Championship. No snow in this one, but Iowa State wins in a high scoring back and forth shootout. Iowa State 40 - Kansas State 38
Don't keep us in suspense. How does the Championship game vs Utah turn out?

Mostly agree, except I have us beating Utah also.

This is going to be hated on but are we sure Abu is a #1 feature back? I mean outside of BYU and KSU he never ran for more than 70 yards. In his next highest yardage games he ran for 67 (long of 39) and 59 (long of 55) so he’s was basically getting most of his yards from 1 long run.

I like the mixture of backs and how we have been using them this year and I have no doubt Abu will break a couple I’m just not sold on him being a #1 back.
Yes, he is. Breece had games where he didn't do much as well. We had one of the worst run blocking OLs in the country last year so none of that really matters. He's had 12 ATTs this year outside of the Iowa game and I do think Iowa is pretty good up front. I used to think he was close to Breece 2.0 and that may not be true but theres a lot of room between that and "not a #1."

Eh, not sure I'm missing it. I thought it was pretty easy before what you're saying played out. Now it's almost criminally easy. Definitely the greatest opportunity we've had that I can ever remember.

People forget how soft those old Big 12 north schedules were the years we missed Oklahoma and Texas. There were more bad teams than average on those schedules.

Sama's more of a crasher it seems.

Breece had/has such a unique running style that it's kind of hard to compare in those terms but I thought his freshman year it was evident he was elite in running through tackles and really leaning into establishing 2-3 more YAC.

Sama has the speed but not sure if he has the lean.

He’s not a guy you can give a straight handoff to on 3rd and 1, 2 or 3 or at the goal line and have confidence he can grind the yards without good blocking up front, which we know doesn’t always happen. So no, he’s not an RB1 imo. He’s the Toni pollard. We just need to figure out who our Zeke is. I think it would be better for Sama and the team’s ceiling if we could figure that out. Change of pace back is an important piece of an offense in today’s game.

Imagine getting Sama the swing pass in the 4th quarter of a slogger and he’s only had 10 touches up to that point.

Minnesota is a bad football team. Much like Iowa, PJ has tallied up a ton of wins against bad teams and then pulls the occasional rabbit out of his hat.

Hall made our average to below average line look a lot better than what it was because of his ability to make people miss and then burn them when they did. Sama has not shown that ability at least yet, I tend to think by the end of the season it will be another RB that is getting most of the carries.
