If a state is entirely in the Eastern time zone, it's not in the Midwest. Hell, Ohio is a full state away from being in the Central timezone. I could maybe give you a "Mid" US designation, but Ohio fails the "West" part on all counts.
Now, calm down. I and all Ohioans can be Midwesterners if we want. Honestly I have not ever talked to an ohioan who didnt consider Ohio a midwestern state. So there! Part of the plan.

This will date me, but I was at ISU in the mid 80's with my 1st year, T's senior year. We had a basketball reffing .5 credit PE class together. We spent half the class studying the Iowa High School rule book, then the other half on the court. We would play pick-up 5 on 5, two people would ref, and the other two were on the sideline getting commentary from the teacher (Gary Greenlee now head of REC athletic facilities at ISU). Our final exam was the test to get licensed, and we had to ref three Intramural games, get video-taped and then get feedback. Great class. One time we were practicing jump balls and I had to jump against T. He wasn't short, roughly 6', but he had GREAT hops, at least compared to my liability of low hops on a 6'3" frame. it was truly laughable trying to jump against T. Quiet guy, but really nice.
Damn Cyber, I was in that class too! Been a ref ever since (but took a hiatus for awhile due to business travel). I always thought Gary was a hell of a good guy. He was also the evaluator of officials for Big 8 women's basketball so I would see him at the women's games critiquing the officials.

I reffed for 15 years…been run out of most small towns in Iowa!…but work travel made it hard to keep my partner

I live in the south (nashville). This won't be a popular opinion, but living in the south (in terms of climate) is way better than living in iowa. You can still do things in the summer. Much like northern folks acclimating to the cold, southern folks acclimate to the heat. Saying how much worse MN is than Iowa doesn't make Iowa winters any more desirable IMO. They both suck. I hate the cold. It was a major factor in me leaving the midwest for greener pastures in terms of weather. To each their own. Give me the heat all day over the Iowa cold.

I totally agree. In an attempt to find that "right" place to retire, I've observed weather for years. What living in the mid-south really means is trading your coldest months for hotter ones. No one is a fan of 100 degree weather, but it still sucks far less than zero. I'll gladly trade zero for 100.

In regards to the MN vs. IA vs. MO, most of the time there is not a drastic difference...maybe 3-5 degrees in Iowa vs. either. BUT....when the fronts come through, the cold generally doesn't reach nearly as far south and the warmth as far north. It is at those times we see the 15-30 degree temp differences and makes it exponentially more brutal as you head north.

For anyone wondering why Iowa is a great place to live, it's the people. If it were the weather, everyone would have left by now!

It’s like someone defined Ohio as “Midwest” sometime around 1820, then it became The Immovable Regional Object.

This is how I’d loosely define parameters to qualify as a Midwest state:
1. Majority of state is in Central time zone.
2. State abuts or contains at least one of Mississippi/Missouri rivers.
3. In Union state territory, geographically (Missouri accepted, partly due to name-of-river thing).

Fringe qualifier: Extreme Northwest Indiana, which is not the name of a state at all.

Side note: I promise not to use the word “abut” for the remainder of today.

SIAP but Noble Thomas now has a Composite Rating - #87 CB and #882 Overall. That gives the class 8 top 1000 guys. For reference, 2020 had 12, 2019 had 9, 2018 had 10.

A sliver of Indiana is in central time and I still don’t call them the Midwest.

I've lived in Indiana for the last 8 years. If Indiana isn't Midwest then Iowa certainly isn't. There's hardly any difference in everyday life.
I lived in Indiana for 8 years. Indiana definitely isn’t the Midwest. Indiana is just colder Kentucky, and Kentucky sure as hell isn’t the Midwest.

I just hate that Indiana thinks they are good enough to be in the Eastern time zone. No they should be central like the rest of us.

I unaffectionately call Indiana the middle finger of the south. I'd say the bigger problem is that Iowa is becoming just as ****** as Indiana/Kentucky than we'd like to admit.

**** I hate the eastern timezone here. The sun sets after 10pm in the summer.
