I agree. Patience would be a good word for tonight. We're not world beaters, but it's hard to say this team hasn't improved from what they were. They will continue to do so. This doesn't just happen overnight, people. You can't just expect a lot of freshmen, sophomores, and transfers that haven't played D-1 ball in over a year to jell and beat everybody. It doesn't work like that unless you have talent like a UNC, Kansas, and Duke. We're not them. Most great teams don't play as many underclassmen as we do. UNI is experienced, we're not, yet. People need to calm down.

Wait until next year again? Pathetic display of effort and coaching. Absolutely no discipline on this team.

This team will crumble in the rugged Big XII . . they play like a bunch of pansies.

I, am far from a delusional fan. This loss is disheartening, but it's not like teams never lose to inferior teams talent wise. It's safe to say that UNI was likely to be the more solid team coming into the game, and they showed it. I can point out a plethora of teams that are more talented and have lost to far inferior teams than UNI this year alone.

If you were watching this game, UNI is a very good passing team. They find the open man. When playing help defense, players rotate to cover and there is usually an open man. UNI hit every open shot. Most nights, that doesn't happen. That's what killed the game in the last 5 minutes. We played good enough defense tonight, but they lit it up and we couldn't hit a shot to save our lives past the first 4 minutes and took poor shots.

It's still early in the season, and we look miles better than we did against Drake. I'm just asking people to calm the hell down, and if they can't, don't watch. Honestly I'm not so sure some people on here know what this team should look like based on realistic expectations and they'll only be happy seeing ISU face-roll everybody and plow our way into the tournament. Not going to happen, sorry. Iowa State is not what it was in basketball what it was in 2000, yet. Fred has been here less than 2 years, give it time.

I am happy that you have some wicked good cardinal Koolaid you are drinking but I don't have any. To say this was much better than Drake just isn't true. If you aren't "there" yet the very least that should be expected is to play incredibly hard. If you make mistakes cause you are playing your *** off, fine, I can live with that but these guys don't play with maximum effort. I can't excuse lack of effort and laziness.

Then perhaps we shouldn't have hired a coach with 0 head coaching experience. I'm sorry but Division 1, Big 12 basketball isn't the place to be learning how to coach.

You say that like i hired him? and do you know of any other coach that could get this type of talent to IOWA freaking STATE!?! cuz i dont. Yeah maybe there are better COACHES out there but this is iowa state. Fred will turn it around eventually.

Listen. Talent only goes so far. We have a lot of talent, but it's individual talent. I could buy a bunch of amazing parts to build a computer, but if I can't figure out how to make them work with each other, it's not gong to matter how great the individual parts are. What matters is that we can win, not that we have one guy who can dominate while the other guys do nothing.

This isn't 100% the case, BUT I bet for a lot of these guys growing up, it was. I bet some of these guys on our team was "Just give the ball to _____ guys" in middle school, even high school sometimes. You don't learn to play team ball that way.

So, coaching. I can't reiterate it enough, but coaching actually matters in the NCAAs. How did Cornell go to the Sweet 16 a few years ago? Coaching. How did UNI go to the Sweet 16 a few years ago? Coaching. Just a few examples. None of the guys on those UNI or Cornell teams could play in the NBA, but hell some of the guys on the Wisconsin's and Kansas's that were beat? Yeah, they could. Does it matter? **** no, because basketball is a team game and good team play and communication wins games. It's not all on the coaching staff though. The players have to be able to learn too. You can try and teach someone something 100 times, but sometimes they won't understand it.

Hitting an open jump shot is not hard, as we've seen in a few games such as the Rice game. However, their defense wasn't good enough to contest many of our shots, but only a few. Now we play a team like UNI who knows how, we don't have as many open shots and voila.

This team needs to learn how to play more as a team. If they learned how to do that, we'd probably be undefeated right now. We played as a team for awhile and in spurts like when we came back and looked like we might win. They just need to continue dong that. Luckily this isn't football and we have probably 20+ more games to go

So CW and others closer to the program basically say expectations need to be tempered, apparently they were right and yet many are carrying on here like this is some huge shock. Its a long season, there is talent on the team. Let the coaches coach and the players play - its embarrassing seeing some of the posters in this thread calling out coaching abiliy, effort, etc...

Hey! Another guy who gets it. Posters jumping off the handle, act more like this guy.

Tournament was the celling of this team, not the expectation, not the middle. Ceiling.

That's fine. We all knew he didn't know how to coach when we brought him in. So as long as you're ok with waiting years and years for Fred to figure it out before we start beating teams like Drake and UNI, I'm fine with that.

I just don't believe all the people on here saying that Fred's this great coach and it's just the players fault. Fred has shown me nothing so far to suggest he knows what he's doing yet? Part of the coaches job is to motivate too.

looks like its time for you to email pollard and start a thread saying "FIRE FRED HOIBERG"! And who on this thread is saying fred is a great coach? the LOGICAL ppl, (and you are not one of them) are saying give him time. And last years team did have alot more heart. And who the hell coached that team? o yeah, fred MF hoiberg!

Kind of reminds me of last years football season. All the debbie downers jumping ship after losing to a team that beats us regularly. You'll be back, but in the meantime... sssshhh..there..there

I know it is his 2nd year of coaching ever, but Fred has played this game his whole life period. He knows basketball, but this team is just flat and no emotion.

Can we try not to melt-down after this game? UNI is not a bad team. Just because they're in the MVC doesn't mean we're automatically better than them. We're still very unexperienced, and what was off tonight was our shooting. It won't happen often, but it was bound to happen eventually.
Inexperienced? We have more older players than UNI. Time to grow up for this team. No point guard capability is killing this team right now.

Its hard to blame everyone after the hype that this team got. Seems like everyone but CW was calling for an NCAA Tourney run.

UMMMMM because its his 2nd year of coaching basketball EVER!! And no, playing basketball in the NBA doesnt automatically make you an awesome coach all the sudden. It takes time just like everything does. Jesus clonedude you really **** me off
2nd year coach or 20 year coach...crappy team or amazing team....effort like tonight is unexceptable
