I agree I would prefer we went outside the program. That would signal a real commitment to change. We can hope for the best. If this guy is worth anything at all, he should only take the job if he gets the keys to control the entire offense.

My guess is Nate only took the job because he had very specific demands in regards to control, and those were met.

I've always really liked Nate, and this is probably the best move you could expect CMC to realistically make.

My guess is Golesh probably called, as well as some others. Heck, possibly even Rhule at Nebraska to get back into the KC area.

I actually have expected Nate to become HC at ISU someday. He just seems to have "it", especially as it relates to the game today and interacting with this generation of players and their personalities.

I don’t know if I agree that the offensive philosophy needs to change all that much. I mean, ****…we move the ball.

Situational play calling was horrible, especially in the red zone (something like 127th in red zone efficiency this year), and our OL was not good.
I can agree with this. Maybe a better way of putting it would be fresh eyes and a complete evaluation. I do think some things on our offense are outdated and have been for a few years but you're right, it probably isn't in need of a 100% revamp.

I think the choice was using outside hires to overhaul the offensive scheme versus focusing on overhauling the o line. And these moves clearly show a plan to primarily do the latter. I do think the chance to make a big impact hire with an OL coach is higher than OC.

Bottom line is these types of outside hires for a 8th year head coach with the past trajectory of the offense are very challenging. Hopefully Campbell can find some good ones.

Brian Ferentz was supposed to be a good Oline coach, right? Wonder if we could get enough Iowa fans to donate to cover his entire salary.

Btw, this wasn't serious. I don't want tie up any low income housing in the Ames area for an Oline coach.

True, but they still handed it off 7 yards deep. Twice. Insane.
Yep, and if you watch all those plays where ISU failed to get a yard you will see that it was a safety or a LBer that shot a gap and made contact behind the LOS. I am just confused as to why the QB sneak is not the automatic call in these situations. If you don't want your starter running it, find someone else on the team that can. lt isn't like it takes a lot of skill to get the snap and plow forward.

I'm fine with NS being OC. Kind of thought that they would bail on Gordon, but I guess not. Now get an OL coach and start fixing that unit.

I don't know. I like Scheelhase on paper but I have too many questions right now... primarily, it strikes me as odd to fire Manning only to promote from within. I mean, I think there were a number of flaws with the offense and I would have liked to have seen some outside people come in and perhaps look more critically. I don't doubt CMC but at the end of the day, sometimes that "fresh" set of eyes and a fresh perspective really can see things that we ourselves are blind to, both in life and in sports. Also while Scheelhase is a very highly thought of young promising coach - this is a lot to thrust on him and think he's going to fix or help fix one of statistically the worst offenses in the nation without ever having done this before. Those are my concerns.

Does it make me right? Heck no. This could be a 15/10 hire and I hope that it is. Because that is what would be best for Iowa State and that's what we all want.

But I don't know if I'm popping champagne bottles. Had we raided a top non-power 5 school I'd grade it higher but if I were handed out letter grades I'd call it a solid B? Maybe B-? IDK. Its hard to grade and judge when there isn't much or any real evidence of what he's like as a play caller.

I hope he has some new ideas because while execution certainly has to improve along with play calling, I also think that this season showed we needed new ideas on offense and I just don't know how this stacks up but I will certainly be hoping for much success

Morever... why did we stick with Gordon as quarterbacks coach?

Seems like Campbell saying:
  1. The offense was broke in 2022 but doesn't need an overhaul schematically. I think most people realized that having a ball control offense is part of Campbell's coaching DNA so he wasn't going to go all Mike Leach on us.
  2. It was Scheelhaase's time to become an OC. Either at ISU or another school.
  3. It's 16 days until national signing day and prime portal season, so best not to draw out an OC search out and move on to getting an OL, RB and S&C coach hired.
  4. Campbell's going to climb back up the mountain or take the big fall with the guys he knows and trusts.

Your key statement, he is gonna climb back up with guys he knows and trusts. Rhoads failed here and he tried to climb back up with 2 dipshits in Mangino and Pistol guy.

I don't think our overall scheme was bad, but poor play calling at certain times resulted in more problems. A QB sneak call a few times (especiallly in the red zone) and our record may be quite a bit different. I think a Oline coach change had to be made. I think our Oline has good size, but maybe leverage is a huge issue because we couldn't get any push on short yardage. There were also a ton of missed blocks that allowed a man or two to run free at the QB or ball carrier that doesn't help. I just hope that we do away with all of the shallow crossing routes, especially on third and long. This would also possibly help free up the running game because everyone is still in the box to stop the crossers.

Color me not impressed at all. We needed some fresh eyes outside the program, this isn't doing anything for me and what's this guys age? Is even 30 yet?

To me confirms Campbell wants someone in that role who will stick to what he wants as the gameplan opposed to an outsider who wants to come in and run their own model; we will find out soon enough. I'm more happy to see we are going to get someone new in to fix the OL.

I honestly don't have an issue with our approach on offense. I don't love it. It's more fun to watch Lane Kiffin's offense for example than ours. But, don't really care as much about that as winning.

Key issue on offense in my opinion is the offensive line. If you play the way we do, you need to execute on short yardage, in the red zone, and be able to run the clock out at the end of games. OL was no where near good enough throughout CMC's tenure to do these things consistently. Changing out the OL coach is probably 2-3 yrs late.

My main concern is that our approach will go unchanged and our OL will take 2-3 yrs to get up to speed (with a good coach). Hope Scheelhaase can coach around it a bit better than we have... but OC will be a really hard job until we get the OL fixed (imho).

I remember when he played at Illinois.

I googled it and he's only 32. That's not old enough to do much of anything, let alone try to turn around a terrible offense. He should apply again in 5 or 6 years.

Not impressed at all by this hire.
I always said, this OC hire will never succeed if it doesn’t impress @jereseib
