When TCU got a first down inside the 20 with a minute + remaining, ISU still had 3 timeouts remaining. It was obvious they would run the ball inside the hashes, consume those timeouts, and, failing a TD, would kick that chip shot FG for the win. CMC, wise beyond his years, did what any seasoned college football coach would do. He left his best unit on the field with the hope they might come up with yet another turnover, or that the TCU kicker would choke.
At 8:59 pm on the Official game day thready, mtowncyclone13 summarized the moment with the comment "Ball game". This was no ordinary opponent. Gary Patterson would not allow this win slip away. But the score was tied, and over a minute remaining. Was there no other option that to just follow the cultural imperative?
What if, in that moment, CMC had elected to instead just let TCU score the touchdown? In that scenario, ISU gets the ball back with a minute on the clock and 3 timeouts remaining. In hockey, the tactic is referred to as *"pull the goalie", a concept with no cultural equivalent in American football. The offense sputtered throughout the evening, but their only true drive occurred in the 4Q. What if they had been handed this one last shot at redemption?
* This is also a contemporary reference to Malcolm Gladwell's 12 Rules for Life, which is episode 7, season 3 of of his podcast series Revisionist History. When you have 45 minutes, it is worth a listen.
You mean Iowa beat an average 8-4 Ron Zook coached Florida team. You realize Nate Chandler beat Florida in a bowl game right?
I was thinking about something along the lines of the drive at the end of the 2nd Qtr of the '09 Insight bowl. Intercepted the ball. 1st and 10 on our 11 yard line with 1:15 left in the half. Everyone thought we would just take a knee and run out the clock. Started out with a QB draw. That touchdown we got at the end of that drive and the half is what gave us the victory.I get what you are saying but I think 1986 was the last time ISU ran a successful draw play lol
And won 10 games that year...
Maybe campbell shouldn't be HC, OC and oline coach?

I'm not sure why Patterson ran plays at all once they got into the red zone as the game was winding down. Figured he'd just center the ball, take a couple knees, and kick the FG as time expired. Why risk a fumble?
We had similar results with Manning in the latter half of last year.Im still trying to figure out why we didn't at least throw a hail merry type pass to Butler with like 25 seconds left just to try and see if he could go up and get it. Instead we dumped it to a guy for a like a 5 yard gain. Just throw the thing up and see if he can get it. So many WTF plays on offense in this game. Love Campbell but he needs to get an offensive coordinator next season or he will be in the same boat at CPR. Start off on fire, then fade and be fired for hiring bad assistants.

I doubt the offensive players are having fun. Winning is fun. Scoring is fun. Actually using the plays practiced all week/Fall in the game is both rewarding and fun. Seems CMC shrinks the playbook during the game too much. Gotta believe there are more plays than run up the middle and passing to the flats in the playbook. The middle has been open for the past 2.5 seasons. DM proved that in the first series against Iowa. I've seen passing to the TE straight up the middle in practice.
Ditch the RPO until you have a QB that will actually run the ball. I get the point of practicing RPO so if your back-ups get into the game you can call it. But make RPO plays part of their practice reps. I thought this coaching staff was good at utilizing a player's strengths. RPO is not a Noland or Kempt strength.
Back to the fun since it is a game after all ... Johnny Orr wanted to play an entertaining style of basketball. The defense is going to keep them in every game. I understand the strategy of winning the time of possession and no turnovers but be entertaining on offense by scoring. The same plays are easy to scout regardless of who is executing them.
