How so?

How many NCAA appearances did UNI have from 1985-2003? ONE.

And from '03-'10, we have had five appearances.

Its not as if UNI is just beating terrible Iowa State teams. UNI is just a completely different program than it was 10-20 years ago.

Well, yes, UNI is beating horrible ISU teams. No way around that. But, the improvement that UNI has made recently may be a matter of fact, that does not mean that, were UNI to have made these strides ten to fifteen years earlier, that they would have had any better chance to have beaten the Tim Floyd and LE teams.

So, your statement that UNI's success recently has more to do with UNI's improvement than ISU's decline is, as I said, patently false.

Its not as if we are the same program as we used to be, and are simply beating a mediocre Iowa State team and not accomplishing anything else. We are now beating Iowa and Iowa State and then also having success in the MVC and in the NCAA's.

You've feasted on some REALLY bad Iowa and ISU teams. Historically bad in iowa's case.

UNI should be commended for where they've come but wouldn't have cut it in a Big 12 or Big 10 schedule. Last year might be the exception to that statement.

I can't speak for the future but I hope they do well.

Please.

UNI's success the last several years on the national scene disproves your theory. UNI has beaten NCAA teams, top 10 ranked teams, final four teams, #1 ranked teams, etc in the last several years. If we were just feasting on terrible ISU teams, and had nothing else to show for it, I would agree with you that it has more to do with ISU's lack of success. But, UNI has accomplished many many things during that time.

10-20 years ago, that was hardly even a realistic dream for UNI. Yet you say, if we had the teams we have now back then, we still wouldn't be able to beat ISU? c'mon...

Thats interesting because, of the schools on his final list, one school on that last went the S16 last year and was ranked in the top 15, and one school played for a national title last year and was ranked in the top 5.

Yet, neither of those schools were B12 or B10 schools...

I see your point, but your overlooking alot of other factors. Kids, believe it or not, do not only care about winning. They care about exposure, being on TV, playing against the best players, playing in front several thousand fans, ect. Unfortunately for UNI, while they win quite oftne, 3/4ths of their games no one in the college basketball world cares about. While Iowa State and Iowa may not have been great lately, they are garunteed a crack at some of the best teams in the nation each year, they are garunteed at least a few games on major television networks, and they are garunteed much more exposure than a MVC program can give.

You, as a UNI fan, see the fact that your program has had a great deal of success as far as winning in the MVC and going to the NCAA tournament. A prospective recruit sees that, but also sees the fact that the vast majority of your games aren't broadcast on TV, don't make the highlights on ESPN, and involve UNI beating a low-level mid-major team by single digits. Sorry, but aside from occassional success in the tournament there isn't a whole lot for a recruit to get jazzed for.

As far as what recruits care about, I don't disagree with you. Kids do care about that stuff.

But I think you might want to go back and compare the exposure between schools like UNI and Iowa state. I just did a quick check and by my count, UNI played 11 times on natinional TV last year, and ISU played 7 times on national TV.

And I'm sure Butler has similar numbers.

So UNI at its best is just ahead of ISU at its worst....Are recruits familiar with probability?

UNI has done a good job of taking mediocre recruits and competing in a mediocre league.

As far as appearances, UNI may be ahead...but lets think about it realisticly. When Iowa State is on TV they are usually playing the likes of Texas, Kansas, Kansas State, ect...teams that will draw a large audience because they are consistantly ranked in the top 10. How many people do you think tune in to an 11 o'clock UNI v. Indiana State game?

Also, one big thing I left out is the NBA. How many NBA players has UNI put out? Also, how many scouts do you think come and watch a UNI v. Missouri Stat game compared to Iowa State v. Kansas, Baylor, Oklahoma, ect. Even though Iowa State hasn't been great, the Big 12 had several guys drated this year...and that means several scouts in seats watching what players from both teams can do.

UNI is what it is. They do well with what they have, but they the times where a recruit would rather play MVC ball for UNI rather than ball for a BCS caliber school are few and far between.

You are, generally speaking, correct.

Won't happen! Name one men's basketball player in UNI's history who actually had an offer from Iowa State and turned it down.

Egleseder would have if he didnt commit to UNI as a freshman...or 8th grader? Does it matter who offered who? UNI has been THE basketball program the past decade in Iowa. Soon it may be just the opposite if Hoiberg doesnt get things turned around.

When will some of you get it through your heads? There is NO BCS in college basketball. UNI is on the same competition level as Iowa, Iowa State, North Carolina, and Duke.

I realize that there is no BCS in college basketball. It is a term indicating the general size and competition level of a conference...geesh.

Agreed. Analysts/media refer to BCS conference teams when talking hoops on tv.

I'm getting ready to go to lunch and have narrowed my choices down to BK, McDonald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, or Taco John's. In no particular order.

But are you open to other options you didn't have any interest in if you drive by them and they offer to sell you lunch?:jimlad:

BCS basketball teams is a concept widely used by most all sports writers, analysts and fans.

Is that hard to get through YOUR head

Um, get ISU to the tournament and then get them to about 17-4 and let me know whos on TV.

Being a dual UNI/ISU fan, I'm wondering how a game between the best ISU team (1999-2000, Fizer, Tinsley, Elite 8) and the best UNI team (last season, obviously) would have gone.

I think ISU would win that game with, but it would be interesting. What do I know? I thought that Kansas would beat UNI in Oklahoma City in the 2nd round, maybe even by quite a bit. However, since I was there to watch the game live and in-person, I was quite happy to have been proven wrong
