Here is the PER for the starting 5 for each squad.

ISU Player Efficiency Rankings:

Niang 26.6
Morris 23.4
McKay 22.3
Nader 17.4
Thomas 13

Iowa Player Efficiency Rankings:

Uthoff 30.4
Jok 21.6
Gesell 20.0
Woodbury 18.5
Clemmons 12.9

How do those compare to Buddy Hield and let's just pick an average college player, let's go with Isaac Haas?

ISU knew that all they needed to do was shut Uthoff down, so that's what they focused everything on in the 2nd half. If Iowa went all in on shutting Niang down, they'd get killed by Monte, McKay, Nader, etc. If Niang had Uthoff's supporting cast his stats would be worse, if Uthoff had ISU's supporting cast, his stats would be better. The fact that as it stands their stats are basically even tells the story.

Niang still gets the teams best defender or combo of. Its not his fault he doesn't have to score all the points for his team and gets them involved.

So just putting Matt Thomas on Uthoff was all ISU needed to do and that shut him down. Sounds pretty simple

George Niang - The 6-foot-8 senior averaged 15.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists last season. He enters his final season as the only active player nationally with at least 1,500 points, 450 rebounds and 300 assists for his career.

Uthoff just broke the 1000 point barrier tonight on 1/21/2016 @ Rutgers NUFF SAID

No, it's not "NUFF SAID". Lacedarius Dunn has the most points in Big 12 history. Does that make him the best player in Big 12 history? No, it means he was a key feature on his team but wasn't good enough to go pro so he played all 4 years. So it's a very flawed and very dumb argument.

All that said, I take Niang, but it's close.

Sure it is. Smith had a much better OL, QB, WRs, etc. Niang has a better PG, C, SF. Unless you think Gesell = Monte, Woody = McKay, etc.

Sure it is. If you think basketball = football.

In which you are the dumbest person ever if that's the truth.

I will agree with Gonzo that it's hard to compare stats apples to apples since Niang plays on the better team of the two.

People really need to watch the second half of the Iowa State vs Iowa game again. Niang guarded Uthoff much more than Thomas did. It wasn't that ISU played that great of D on him, He (Uthoff) basically just decided to disappear. Gessell was the only Iowa player that wanted the ball when the game got tight. Any Iowa fan want to dispute this? This is the reason why you gotta pick Niang all day. He would never disappear and shy from the limelight in a big game.

Uthoff had 18 points in the 2nd half tonight vs Rutgers

Uthoff's problem vs ISU mainly was the inability of Iowa's PGs to run a cohesive offense and get him the ball. He's likely more skilled offensively than Niang and has better shot blocking ability due to his length. Two completely different players though, so I'm not sure why we're trying to compare the two. I honestly don't think Niang is ISU's most valuable player this season anyways.

But he's not. See above.

Georges also plays 3 more minutes per game than Uthoff.

For an actual apples to apples comparison:

Stats per 40 min:

Georges: 24.2 ppg, 7.9 reb, 3.8 apg, 1.1 stl, 0.9 blk, 2.4 TO
Uthoff: 25.5 ppg, 8.5 reb, 1.6 apg, 1.2 stl, 4.2 blk, 1.9 TO

Just for the hell of it, here is each player's PER (player efficiency rating), in which higher is better (and only one player in the NBA has a rating over 30 this year):

Georges 26.6
Uthoff 30.4

Now it appears Uthoff has had a better season, no?

Gesell is the last person you want with the ball with 2 minutes before half or the end of the game. He'll have a good game here and there but he does some real head scratching things at times and he's not a guy who can take it to the rim in crunch time consistently. He's really tough on defense but is prone to offensive gaffes and is limited somewhat. He and Sapp did a poor job of creating space and getting the ball to Uthoff in the 2nd half.

Really surprised that McKay's is so high and Thomas's so low.

Gesell is not at all who you want in crunch time, you would probably want Uthoff. He was nowhere to be found in crunch time though. Sure you can blame the pg's for him not getting the ball, but if you're one of the top players in the country you demand the ball.

The guy is legit, but he seems scared of being the man when it gets tough on the court.

Uthoff got a lot of good looks against ISU because our guards Naz and Monte injured at the time and couldn't keep up with switching ect. If Uthoff is uncontested and open he is deadly. Hand in his face and a little pressure he is dead.

Niang can play all positions 1 to 5 and Uthoff can't. Uthoff has the luxury of a deeper bench and can rest where ISU has little to no bench........not to mention Big 12 play much harder than Big10. When it comes to "career stats" Uthoff is not even close. On many levels hard to believe we are even having this discussion. Beating Iowa is easier than one thinks. I'm not surprised Iowa is winning. I'm surprised Big 10 teams haven't figured it out yet. To beat Iowa all you have to do is stop the 3's. Put your two best defensive players on Joc and Uthoff and you win the game. Just stick to em like glue. I don't think Iowa has broke 30 points in a half when they don't get all those 3's. Just look at second half of ISU and MSU games it's quite obvious. Once these other teams figure out the Iowa 3 point game they will probably fall off the Big 10 cliff....and so will Uthoff's stats.
