This is where I’m at. We have the best staff and admin in school history in my view, and we are plugging holes in the dike (and doing a good job of it too). But you wonder for how long?

Hopefully the more stable environment Blum speaks of comes to fruition, and the sooner the better
I think it has to. Even the programs with all the advantages currently don't like the uncertainty.

This podcast made me emotional and sad.

It was partially set up by being over anxious to get the pod for several days after beating Miami in a weird and exciting bowl game plus our top 5 basketball team taking care of business in the house of horrors that is Colorado.

Then I basically got the reminder that the sport I love most (college football) has become fully commercialized and as a result will be inaccessible to many programs and fans as we move forward. And got further clarity about the thought that’s been in the back of my head for months now, Iowa St athletics is currently living on a knife’s edge. We are patching things together to keep it afloat while being in the most successful period we’ve ever had in the two major sports. If and when the pendulum swings back the other direction, all the off the field things could snowball downhill fast.
I love CW and Blum but felt the former took an unnecessarily riled up tone. I read Jamie’s letter and thought it made sense and was a reasonable response given current realities.

Felt Cdubs’s approach did more riling up and potentially upsetting core base than rallying. I’m not sure if it’s his true position or if he’s playing the angles and more passionately commentating.

But to me it didn’t make for a. great content or b. hopeful vision for where we’re heading after one of the best week’s in Cyclone athletics.

Exhorting fans to give more $ to NIL and the Cyclone Club while talking about taking your families to Disney is certainly a take.
Good sir, I hope you break the record for most dumbed post on this site.

These dudes were in Orlando covering the most successful football team in our schools’ history (which Blum fundraised to keep in tact) and went to Disney with their families. How miserable is your life that you’re against them taking their kids to Disney?

What we do is tough. All fans are different. The more casual fans just want game previews and breakdowns. The type of fans we started all of this on CF for are the diehards who want it all. The games matter a lot. But this is a big picture show and without the other stuff, the games won't matter much anymore. We all love Iowa State but if Iowa State is 2-10 every year, I promise that love will dwindle.

To a fault, I am very much a big picture guy. I'm constantly looking 5 years into the future. I can't bury my head in the sand. Trust me, I wish I could. It has haunted me internally for 40 years - this anxious fear of failure, etc. It probably bleeds into the pods with Iowa State.

I believe I have been very consistent about one thing since Texas & OU left for the SEC. This has the opportunity to be the best thing to ever happen to Iowa State. And I totally believe that. But we all have to accept REALITY and also realize it might be at the TOP level. Being tier 2 to the SEC and the Big Ten is where this is going. Iowa State will still compete at their level, but would you rather go 9-3 in the Big 12 most years or 5-7 in a new Big Ten? That's for you to decide. Iowa State is finally going to be somewhat punching at its own weight class.

I also have been consistent about the importance about having Matt and TJ stick around (of course, Jamie Pollard too). The one thing I believe would be a massive blow at this time is instability.

Luckily, that isn't the case.

And for the record, ISU is the one who released this letter on Jan. 1. Had it not come out, this would not have been the tone of the podcast. Look at the size of the thread that was on CF when it came out. Exponentially more conversation regarding that than a bowl game that happened 4 days prior.

I respectfully disagree. I think CW is wrong to criticize Campbell for not being more forthcoming about injuries and opt-outs.

Being more forthcoming about this creates a competitive disadvantage and it only helps the gamblers. Anything Campbell can do to make it less attractive for gamblers is fine by me.
What? So since I don't get to gamble but pay money to watch games, attend games or buy Iowa State merchandise (because of its athletics) we don't matter? Fans spent the weeks leading up to this game happy and prideful that everyone was going to be playing. It helped to fuel fan interest knowing ISU was going to be playing with a full deck against #15 Miami and that gave it a great shot to win, especially since Cam Ward was playing for Miami. So fans spent that time talking to other, getting hyped up for the game and so on. Then IT IS deflating to learn right before kick that two of top players are sitting out with a, "nah". Fans fuel college athletics and if Iowa State had lost by a score due to a WR that doesn't normally play the X...yeah, fans would be upset and let down. In a one off game that's more exhibition than anything, be upfront about player availability.

I have always been on the fence regarding beer sales at Jack Trice. However, continuing to raise prices and not selling beer is reaching old man yelling at the could territory.

The idea that people are going to be falling down drunk all over the stadium and it will ruin the family atmosphere is hard to continue to sell when we can see that isn't the case at so many places.
I found no less than 30 empty shooters and empty beer cans in the bathroom stall both times I've got this year. There was also a guy passed out in my section for the entire 2nd half of the Texas Tech game. (Kind of jealous actually, given how that game went)

But the idea that ISU fans that want to get drunk are not already getting the maximum amount of drunk they will get is debatable AT BEST.

I have 3 small kids, and I really don't have a problem with it. I know what it is. I know where I'm taking them. I've taken them to away games where they sell beer, too. Wasn't a problem at all.

It's like taking them to a public pool, beach or waterpark and trying to keep them from seeing a lot more skin than usual, maybe too much at times.

It's gonna happen, and you know that going in. It's a football game in the Upper Midwest. It's not some secret. It's up to you as a parent to decide if that's a problem. The current policy doesn't change that IMO.

Ushers and cops are still going to respond to problem drunks and take care of it whether they are actively holding a beer or not. If anything, it might actually help them root out the bad ones if they are sloshing a tall boy around while they are disturbing others or behaving inappropriately.

A beer at a public event basically functions as a big flashing sign to those around them, including authorities, which invites others around them to scrutinize their level of intoxication a lot closer than they would otherwise. Nobody ever mentions that.

Kind of like doing everything possible to stigmatize and hide things from your kids. Just makes it worse later on.

This was my entire point. I swear to god I wasn't referencing gambling at all.

I still don't blame Matt of the players. He's trying to win the game and they are looking out for their future. The rules let Matt do this and he believes it provides and advantage. Why I think there has to be something from above to dictate more transparency.

I think 99 percent of fans would have been cool with the guys sitting out had it just been announced prior to. We all get it. You just don't want to feel like you've been sold a bill of goods.

Iowa State won though so this hasn't been a big deal. Which is great.

in a game of inches, why give up anything that could possibly be an advantage if you don't have to?
I don't necessarily have a problem with it. I'm very much in the "let CMC cook" camp. IMO it's one of the biggest selling points we can offer him over bigger brands in order to keep him around.

So for that reason alone, I'm never going to push the issue. You do you, Campbell. He's earned that trust.

But I DO see a logical flaw in the "competitive advantage" argument. We should absolutely want the rule to change. Simply put, if it's a possible advantage for us, then what keeps it from cutting the other way just the same? It's just as likely to be a competitive disadvantage for us.

In fact, with respect to raw talent on paper, you could argue that this is more likely to make it a competitive disadvantage over time. What are the chances forcing both teams to gameplan for a top player(s) that's not going to actually play is a net gain for ISU in terms of having the talented depth to exploit it?

Especially for a team that really relies on winning in the margins and out-coaching the other team.

Personally, I think we should want both teams to have to lay their cards of the table ASAP. This gives us more time and certainty to focus on ourselves in detail and put ourselves in the best possible position to actually execute on game day.

Our opponents are generally going to have an edge over us if both teams are using an obscured plan B in the actual game. We should want the rule to change.

I can deal with the reality. I'm a man. I'm 40 (one).

To me it felt a bit like the CEO/President of the company dealing out some hard truths, but striking a pretty solid tone in an all company meeting.

Then one of the Sr leaders on the team getting everyone pissed off in the break room over coffee feeling taken advantage of and like there's no hope.

I’m an ISU fan not a specific player fan. I’m honestly impressed that they kept this stuff quiet. I went back and looked and DMd a couple other posters who we share info with that Porter was sitting on the 16th. These decisions were made pretty quickly after the CCG it seems and somehow the staff kept it quiet so Miami had to plan for them being in.

If they require updates, all they will do is put Higgins and Porter in the injury list as questionable with something like a muscle pull.

@ChrisMWilliams and @brentblum I agree with your sentiments on going after youngerish donors. I'm in my 30s with 2 young kids and will not be a large donor at this point in time. But happy to make a monthly contribution to the pay the players fund

A number of years ago I was sitting down with someone from the alumni association. They asked me "Do you know how much you have given to ISU over the years?" I had to answer "No, I don't." Well, they of course had the number and it was pretty surprising to hear the amount in aggregate. That was all pre-NIL and everything but it does show how things add up over time.
