His kids aren't going to sign off on an NBA gig and his kids/wife are far more important to him than any job. Of course I don't know this as fact but I'd bet a paycheck on it.

I just hope the fans continue to support him. Next season may not go as well as the past two seasons, but there will undoubtedly be people questioning his coaching ability.

Pay him. Pay his staff(!!!) Support the heck out of Fred, his teams, fill Hilton... and he will stick around till retirement.

Stupid, irrelevant people.

Fred also made over $10M in the NBA. He doesnt seem like the kind of guy that would spend that on blow and strippers, so he probaly invested it well. That plus making $1.5M in Iowa, living in his hometown, coaching the team he loves goes along way to living a good life.

He spent it on pot. Don't you read?

Doubt he's going anywhere until he at least accomplishes something of a little more magnitude than an NCAA second round exit.

No doubt. He hasn't made that coveted NIT run just yet, which is all the rage.

People are all too quick to cast this idea aside. I understand what Fred has said about leaving, and I understand his history with our program. However, this wouldn't be the first time a fanbase has thought a coach was completely entrenched only to have them leave for greener pastures.

I get that Fred apparently came here because it was Iowa State and he wanted to restore the program to promenence. But the other thing coming here did for Fred was move him several rungs up the "coaching ladder" in a short time. Most guys, including former players, have to toil as an assistant for years before getting a chance to become a head coach. There is at least a small possibility that part of Fred's motiviation was to get valuable head coaching experience quickly.

I too want to believe that he is here forever, but we've been burned before...

The Hoibergs decided early on in his NBA career that since they had no idea how long his NBA days were going to last, they would live as though Fred had a more regular job out of college. They never got into flashy NBA type housing, cars, etc. and stayed very middle/upper middle class in their lifestyle.

They saved a bunch during his career and are not worried financially at all. They earn more in interest than they need to live on.

Money is not a driver.

Someone's been digging through the Hoiberg's trash again.

We aren't anywhere near where Fred feels we should be in order for him to move on and because of that I am not worried at all

If Fred leaves us within the next three seasons I will personally burn CycloneErik's season tickets. That is how much faith I have in Fred "Dreamy" Hoiberg.

Never say never, but if he does leave I just don't think it'll be this quickly. Nobody knows better than him that coaches are hired to be fired in the NBA, and an opportunity like he has now to not only go home but to be successful is a rare find.

What you saw in the post-game presser yesterday from Fred should tell you all you need to know. ISU is as much a part of Fred as Fred is part of ISU. The two are inseparable at this point. I would see this as more of a Coach K type of situation than a Tim Floyd situation. Fred wants to build a legacy.

I can't see Fred leaving ISU for another coaching job. There just aren't any out there (open now or in the immediate future) that are better then here. Brad Stevens, Shaka Smart, and all these other "hot" coaching guys are on to something. Either one of those guys could have any open job the last two-three years and they have turned them all down. They got raises where they were and the money they are making in Indianapolis/Richmond will go a lot further then say in Los Angles (UCLA).

Hoiberg can get ISU to a final four from Ames, Iowa, just like Butler and VCU can make a run. Taking all the emotion and homerism out of it, I don't see why Hoiberg would leave for another college job...he doesn't have to.

Now for the NBA, I could see that, but I think it's a ways down the road.

Are you hoping that if you tell yourself that enough times, it will come true?

I honestly don't think Fred would leave for another college job.

A lot of coaches are staying put recently. Look at Shaka Smart. Everyone thought he would be gone right after he got on the scene. He's stuck around and seems pretty happy. We will see if he jumps to UCLA or not. Still, he stayed at VCU longer than expected.

Many coaches are realizing that it can sometimes be easier to get to the dance and make a big run at a smaller school. VCU doesn't have to worry about getting consistently under-seeded any more because of their conference. If you have a good team, the seeding committee actually gives you credit now.

We can pay Fred enough to keep him happy and hopefully keep his assistants happy. If Fred thinks he can get to Final Fours here (which I think he can) I think he will stick around.

I think Shaka knows that if he were to go anywhere else, it would take a couple years to get his type of players playing his system well. A multi-year transition at UCLA could have him on the hot seat before he even gets started.
Fred pretty much has a job for life at ISU. He knows that. We will give him as much as we can to let him succeed.

I'm not incredibly worried about the NBA. Fred has been there and seen that a coach is only as good as his roster. If you aren't in LA or Miami it is hard to convince superstars to stay or come to your team. Why leave a job at ISU where you could retire as a playing and coaching legend to go to an NBA team where they might give your 3 years before they expect you to beat whatever team has the most superstars at that point?
