I really like the potential of our two tackles. I think Miller could develop into a beast. He used that length really well against Clemson. Hopefully he can maul people in the run game. I think this could be our best OL in a long long time.
Not having Remsburg really hurt us last year in my opinion.

Why do fans always say stuff like this? 5'8" is really short. It doesn't have to be exaggerated or listed generously.

Also applies to "soaking wet" comments about a guy's weight. Sometimes, a small guy is listed at a small height/weight because it's accurate.

You think he's really 5'5"? 5'6"? That's tiny.
I don't think he's 5'8" but I'll never know enough to argue. I do know somebody who is 5'9" who has met him. I suppose if he's an NFL prospect, we will find out.

Baylor and Oklahoma State feel like a clear top 2 with Bohanon and Sanders returning. Between Oklahoma Texas and Kansas State getting decent QB transfers its tough to say if we have a good chance at 3rd or drop to 6th or lower. Our defense will probably be solid again, but it really falls on whether our OL improves and whether Dekkers is the real deal or not. Cant wait to find out.

Not sure I would consider KSU's QB transfer as being in the same level as UT or OU. The Huskers offense was pretty inconsistent. I might be proven wrong, but IMO Martinez is a step below Thompson.

Until the Longhorn QB faces game action, there is a big question mark there as well. I like where ISU sits with Dekkers being in ISU's system for 3 years.

The Huskers are my "2nd" team, with many family and friends who are rabid fans. So I watch all their games. Very few fans are sorry to see Martinez go, as far as wanting to win. He is consistently inaccurate on long passes. He can be pretty good within 15 yards of the LOS. But even on a wide receiver screen, he will throw the ball in the turf or over the receiver. You just scratch your head. And he fumbles a lot.

So, I would consider him a downgrade from Thompson as well. Factor in also, at NU he was playing with a lot of high 3 star and many 4 star recruits. How will he manage working with less talent around him?

Kansas State’s philosophy hasn’t changed much from Bill Snyder’s tenure from what I can tell. I think they’re gonna set Martinez loose and let him scramble wildly until he gets carted off the field.

Offensive line is going to be worrisome imo

Always.... every year.

It used to be downright bad every year for quite a while.... but the last several seasons it's at least been average. But average doesn't cut it for how Campbell wants to win games.

He wants to be able to ground and pound, and play great defense, and he's stubborn about that fact. So stubborn that it's cost us the last few Iowa games IMO. He wants to out-Iowa Iowa, but doesn't have the OL to do it. IMO, we could have beaten Iowa the last few years had we opened it up and spread it out, got our RB's out of the backfield on their LB's, etc and let our guys make plays in space..... but nope.

Yeah. Our line was actually good in 2020. Remsburg was a huge part of that. He and Simmons work well together in particular
Thats how i remember it too. I was looking for those two to be awesome last year.
There are guys that could be studs. You just never know til its out there on the field.

Reading between the lines, the narrative for next season so far is: Iowa State lost everything from last fall. They’re hopelessly young and inexperienced. It’s gonna be a bloodbath. Thankfully, things are back to normal in Ames.

I don’t feel that way at all. We’ve had unprecedented continuity with the coaching staff and they’ve been great about rotating in the backups.

But, yeah- underestimate Iowa State. Fine by me.
The defense should keep us in most games. There could be more overall explosiveness on offense (hard to believe w/Breece leaving) but will take time to gel.
I hope to hear more about the specialists from future practice reports. Given how Campbell wants to play, punts/kick offs are an important role and that aspect of the game lost some games for the Cyclones last year.

Ryan Harklau was also really excited about JC transfer James Neal. We might not only have two starting tackles, but actual depth at the position for a change.

(You know, like every other position on the team now.)

You know, I was totally sold on Ben Bruns’ eye for talent when KO was starting at tackle here, and Brunsie said he’d be a lot better inside. And that proved to be true in the NFL.

I’m hoping Harklau has the same eye for talent. Because he was absolutely gushing about guys like Dominique Orange and Ikenna Ezeogu…and that’s just mentioning the ‘22 signees who play the DL like he did.

I think you need to win the field position battle and the TO battle. Kirk is pretty much the master of eventually only needing to move the ball 20 yards to score and then bleed out the clock and win 10-7
My thought is usually the TO battle also coincides with the field position battle. Sorry for the squak talk.

Why? Because we lost Newell & Schweiger?

As usual, I think the line will be disappointingly adequate. Not bad; not great. We’re certainly not lacking size or experience.

Yeah, Newell was a shell of himself the whole year. And I don't know if he was great to start with. Schweiger was a Guard playing RT. He battled, but his limitations showed up a lot. I feel like the OL is always a concern for ISU, but they have some pretty good players returning who have a lot of snaps. Should be improved from last year at the very least.

Where did Harklau say all this? I heard there was a podcast but can't find it and would love to potentially listen.

FWIW Ezeogu is gonna be a beast, he was low-key a big time get/recruit that not a ton of people are talking about. He had a ton of offers.

It’s the CyCast podcast. I find it in Apple Podcasts, but it should be easy to find elsewhere.

Agree. I said at the time this class signed that he was the one I was most excited about. Huge ceiling for this kid.

According to ESPN, Noel had 15 returns for 92 yards last season for an average of 6.1 yards per return. Zero fair catches. We fielded 17 punts as a team. Milton had 1 return for 11 yards. Darien Porter had 1 return for 8 yards. No fair catches.
I don’t think the usual stats list fair catches. They just don’t count as returns.

To be fair Husker fans are some of the most irrational in the country. It's pretty crazy the hate Martinez gets from them. He was their entire team the last 4 years. People would probably be surprised to see his stats compared to a guy like Brock Purdy. He threw less interceptions and fumbled fewer times than Brock on far more carries. He also has a similar completion percentage. Him being the scapegoat in Lincoln is more about the arrogance and delusion husker fans who think they are just one player away from the cfp. Not to mention focusing on Martinez takes the attention off of the 20 million dollar elephant in the room.

I didn’t follow Nebraska much but it sure looks like they lost in the margins quite a bit. By the numbers it seems like his TD/Int ratio is a bit low compared to Purdy and seems like he took lots of sacks. Interested to see if he had fumbles. They certainly seemed to be close in every game. Im sure that was frustrating
