For those who might not know what kind of tractor a JD 2640 is here is a picture of one. It would basically be a utility or chore type of tractor as it's only a 70 HP tractor so it wouldn't have enough horse power to do any heavy field work. It wouldn't take much to knock a tractor like this off the road, especially in a pickup that was driving with any kind of speed.

Some kind of trailer was attached as well according to TMZ. Can't imagine it was particularly large. I'm always looking for deer that time of night in southern Iowa, not sure if they are as common up north.

Touche. Obviously the local stations are going to be faster to report, but the ones I had seen didnt say he was driving.

It is awful to leave the scene period. It's just plain stupid as well, especially if he wasn't driving.

Let me be clear, I was not defending him at all.

I always forget it is darker farther north. We still have pretty good light after 8:00 for a while in southern Iowa this time of year. We also have a ton of farm equipment and occasional Amish buggies.

Not this time of year. Sunset in Independence, Iowa was 8:01. Due south in Keosaqua it was 7:58.

Maybe by running on foot he thought he could escape for 4/5 hours to sober up because he obviously knew he was hammered and knew what he had done.

That's sad. Going off of a similar situation I followed recently, I think he'll get 5 years and serve half that. Assuming he can be found guilty.
If he would have stayed at the scene and tried to help he would be looking at a year. Seems low for someone's life but it's reality.

If they prove he was intoxicated, that's a class B felony and he will be in prison a while. Vehicular homicide, Iowa Code section 707.6A, subsection 1.

May be tough to prove that, though. There's a gap of time between when he hit the tractor and when he got picked up. Any blood test would effectively be worthless, as he could say that he was so upset, he started slamming beers at home.

Looks like they might have open container in the truck based on the police report, but that's it.
