Frank Mason admitted to the violation and daring the ref to call it! See the new thread with the link to his interview.
"In gymnasiums with limited space outside the sidelines and endlines, a defensive player may be asked to step back no ore than three feet." Mason didn't commit a violation. There is no RULE that requires you to stay three feet back. It is just left to the refs to decide if they want to ask a player to scoot back or not in a situation where there isn't much room. The ref asked. Mason complied and then moved back to where he is allowed to be. What's the ref going to do, give him a technical? That this is a conversation is ridiculous.

I thought you supposedly watch a lot of basketball. If the official believes the sideline is not wide enough they have every right to back the defender off and tell them to not get closer.
Yes, you are correct. But it's not a rule. You cannot violate a rule that does not exist. Mason did everything within the rules to make that tough. Could the ref have stepped in and asked him to move back? Sure. Could the ref also have called the obvious violation of a real rule with the forearm to Mason's head on the drive to the rim at the end of regulation instead of the lame over the back call on Lucas? Sure.

This is still the most appropriate Big 12 Refs tweet ever... and it still kinda hurts.

Would anybody be interested in a @Big12Refs board game? You roll dice, move your piece around the board, and at the end, Kansas wins.

And? We have already discussed the fact that his foot went over the line. WHERE IS THE BALL when that happened? Was Hield still holding it or had he already attempted to throw it in when that happened?

So your way of thinking it isn't a violation is saying Mason didn't break the rule until the moment Hield tried to throw it in? Isn't that the exact time Hield should be given space to inbound the ball?

You're right, it is up to the refs to give buddy room, since there isn't proper space on the sideline. Did they? No. It's the refs fault.

What should have happened was, once the ref saw that there inbounder did not have proper space, the whistle should have blown, and he should back Mason off the line. No foul, no free throws take place. Does it change the outcome, probably not.

I'm not sure that Vitale was correct when talking about the job that KU was doing on Hield last night. Just because the defender stuck with him for a couple of times late in the game when Hield was obviously gassed and barely moving without the ball doesn't mean that the defender stayed with him. Thomas didn't do too bad of a job on Hield.

Also, I have to agree about watching the game. I thought I could just sit back and enjoy but found myself rooting for OU every time they came back.

In his last 5, Heild has had 33, 22, 34, 27, and 25 in regulation. The only home game in that stretch was against ISU where Heild had 22. Thomas did a great job on him.

Tuco is truly pathetic thinking there was no violation. So desperate. It's sad when the most talented team gets the benefit of the most egregious calls every season. **** Kansas

That was a tremendous exhibition of skill and heart before a great crowd in tradition rich old time gym. Not much to dislike in that kind of basketball.

Not exactly sure.

Ok ok let's examine both possibilities. This happened before the pass, is illegal right? This happened after the pass, mason deflected the ball while touching the ground, so this is where his feet were when the pass was made using your statement. Mason is therefore out of bounds while touching the ball. New throw in.

Too bad it had to end with a horrible no-call that will taint the memory of the game.

HUH? So you're trying to say that Mason can't step on the line even after Hield throws the ball in? i am just curious to see WHEN Mason stepped on the line.

Mason had to run to go get the ball so odds are he is not currently in possession of the ball at the time of that photo.

So basically you're ideal strategy is to back away from the inbounder, run full speed at him and then try to time it correctly to jump into him as he's inbounding the ball for the steal?
