Weather channel lady said that in the NW quadrant of Florence there was a reported 83 foot wave. I dont know how that data was collected be it a buoy or hurricane hunter- if true that is just unfathomable!

Saw a documentary on rogue waves that said some get up to 100’. It was attempting to explain some ships that have been lost without a trace. In that light, 83’ in a hurricane seems plausible.

I saw where some residents are going to ride this out. I sure hope that emergency personnel do not put their lives at risk to rescue these people if the storm does as much damage as is forecasted. I don't want anyone to get hurt but, with a storm like this and they were calling for mandatory evacuations and you just want to ride it out, well then you get what you get. You can chalk this up to Darwin's Theory of Evolution.

I was listening to the radio yesterday morning while getting my oil changed and a guy called in who was driving into the storm to ride it out. He apparently does this every year (heads to the site of a hurricane). The host was able to string this guy along for about an hour, getting a detailed description of what he was hauling (a large number of NATO-certified fuel cans, tortillas and peanut butter for sustenance, chainsaw, shotgun, etc), how he was planning on riding it out (parking garage above storm surge level, when it gets crazy he'll duck into the stairwell), etc.

The kicker? The dude riding into the storm is a commercial airline pilot.

Makes you feel good about flying, right?

I'm flying into Atlanta tomorrow morning around 8:15 am, departing for Des Moines around 9:30 am. Hopefully I'm far enough ahead of this thing It won't be a problem. Going home through Houston so shouldn't be much worry.

I've seen a couple of local officials say that once the storm hits, the people who stayed are on their own. Emergency personnel won't be sent in until it's safe(r) to do so.

That sounds about as smart as trying to ride out a tsunami.

Hmm. Family has been vacationing south of Myrtle Beach (Pawleys Island area to be specific) for probably 20+ years now. Guessing that might not happen next year. Wonder if my folks have put anything down for the deposit on the house we rent.
Never gonna get that damage deposit back this year.

Interesting how the radar on my weather app shows next to nothing off the coast

I went to the Weather channel on my PC and didn't see anything there as well.

most radar has ~150 mile maximum reach. the storm is still ~400 miles off shore. That's why you'll need to use satellite imagery to see it.

Family and I were supposed to have a week long vacation in Hilton Head starting this upcoming Saturday. Been looking forward to the trip all year...

The craziest part of this is, my family had a weeklong vacation booked in St. Maarten last December but Hurricane Irma essentially destroyed the island and we couldn't go.

Hurricanes don't want us to go anywhere apparently... the pain would be made easier with a Cyclones win over OU this weekend though

Looks like Aunt Flo is becoming a bit erratic...down to a Cat 2 and forecast to make landfall that way.

83 / 6 = 13.83 fathoms

Let's call it 14 fathoms from the top of the wave to what normal sea level would be, as someone isn't literally riding atop the wave to measure.
