I was listening to the radio yesterday morning while getting my oil changed and a guy called in who was driving into the storm to ride it out. He apparently does this every year (heads to the site of a hurricane). The host was able to string this guy along for about an hour, getting a detailed description of what he was hauling (a large number of NATO-certified fuel cans, tortillas and peanut butter for sustenance, chainsaw, shotgun, etc), how he was planning on riding it out (parking garage above storm surge level, when it gets crazy he'll duck into the stairwell), etc.

The kicker? The dude riding into the storm is a commercial airline pilot.

Makes you feel good about flying, right?

That. Is. Awesome. Of course I wouldn't want to be a burden to anyone else...but I would LOVE to do something similar. It's actually a dream of mine to sail through a storm like this. Me vs nature. Me just trying to survive.

Edit: Upon graduation I considered a career in the coast guard with the dream of being a rescue swimmer. There is just something about being out in the @#%* that I love. I'm that guy that sees a blizzard forecast so wants to go on a bike ride or a hike. I ******* love weather!

That sounds about as smart as trying to ride out a tsunami.

I know there was at least one tsunami where a few days prior, the animals in the area disappeared to higher ground.

Humans went out and explored the ocean floor when it receded, as the tsunami was gathering up. Chalk one up for the animal kingdom.

I can all but guarantee there's at least a few out there that are getting selfies in the storm and posting them.

I can't find it now but one of the hurricane hunter peeps I follow on Twitter tweeted a picture of a sailboat that was in the path of Florence. One way or another they were able to get in contact with them...they had no idea a major hurricane was coming.

83 / 6 = 13.83 fathoms

Let's call it 14 fathoms from the top of the wave to what normal sea level would be, as someone isn't literally riding atop the wave to measure.
What you are describing would be a 168 foot wave. Wave height is measured from crest to trough so an 83 foot wave is a little over 40 feet above normal sea level (assuming there isn't tidal surge). The measurement from crest to still water line is the wave's amplitude, half of the wave height.
