Here is why some of you are wrong ... KU folds without Big 12 officials ... And more importantly they play shoddy when facing same sized skill set people. A good Big 10 team will tear them apart on a neutral court just like Michigan did last year.
KU has definitely had some memorable tournament losses. But this fact tends to skew people's judgment regarding KU's overall success in the tournament. In Bill Self's ten years at Kansas, we have made it to at least the Elite 8 five times (with 2 Final Fours, and 1 NC). Only three times have we not made it to at least the Sweet 16. I doubt there are more than a couple of coaches that have won more tournament games over the past 10 years.
The idea that KU struggles in the tournament because of a difference in officiating is just silly. Last year, KU went 14-4 in the Big 12 regular season. We had 325 fouls against us and 343 fouls called against our opponents. So for every foul against KU, there were 1.05 fouls called against KU's opponent. Over our last 18 NCCA tournament games (which includes the 5 tournaments after our NC), KU has gone 13-5. There have been 280 fouls called against KU and 312 fouls called against KU's opponents. This comes out to 1.11 fouls against our opponents for every foul called against KU.
If the tournament started tomorrow, I wouldn't pick KU to make to the Final Four. But I think we probably have the highest ceiling of any team out there, and I expect us to continue to improve and be a Final Four caliber team by the end of the year. As of right now, counting only conference games, KU is 1st in the conference in FG% (54%), 1st in 3pt% (41%), 1st in blocked shots (5.86), 1st in assists, and 1st in rebounding margin (+9.6). Until our game with Iowa State last night, we were also 1st in FG% defense. However, KU is 9th in the conference in turnover margin (-3.86). For KU to go to the next level and compete for a national championship, we need to start creating as many turnovers as we commit.
