I doubt we will ever know what the total truth is, but I find it hard to believe that Fred would do anything to harm ISU or the program.
Now....was he in a tough position? Absolutely. Imagine trying to recruit someone when you don't know, and can't say for sure that you are still going to be the coach. I guess some on here would just lie to the recruits or something.
I think his only option was to more or less suspend the recruiting, especially after Matt left, and kind of wait and see what developed with the Bulls position. If he was offered (which was likely, and he knew that) then he would have to decide whether or not to accept.
If he chose to leave, at least he was leaving the new coach a very good returning team for his first year at ISU. If he stayed.......then it may have been a mad dash to try and get some of the recruits to still commit for 2015, or at the very least land a couple of quality transfers. He would have had to find a good recruiter to replace Matt, then recruiting for 2016 would have to pick up. If the recruits were no longer there, then we would probably have been in for another year of transfers and jucos to fill out the roster for 2016.
I don't see how Fred could have stepped down earlier, or even if he had how that would have changed the situation much. Frankly, if he had quit earlier, it may have been an even bigger mess...especially in terms of the current team staying around.
Fred did not put ISU in a bad position.....the NBA season, and the management of the Bulls did that. They could have fired their coach right after the Cleveland series, but supposedly they didn't want him to get hired by another team....so they waited.
This may knock ISU back for a year or two, but I just hope that Prohm can continue his Murray State success here and capitalize for 2016 on what should be a great season next year. 2016 recruits and transfers are going to see ISU a lot next year. If ISU is as successful as we all expect them to be, I think Prohm will be in good shape for 2016 and beyond.
Relax.
