Legitimate question, who's better, Haas or Adam Woodbury?

Thats a pretty big tossup. Haas is a better scorer, but, Woodbury was probably better at the things big guys excel in, like rebounding and shot blocking. Woodbury probably also the better ball handler.

From an Iowa fan that watches a lot of B1G basketball (insert lame joke here), here are my thoughts on Purude.

Swanigan-- As has been covered in this thread, he is a beast. Pretty much guaranteed a double double each night and has range out to the 3 point line. Good FT shooter too. This will be a tough matchup for Young.

Vince Edwards--He is their best athlete. Expectations were that he would develop into a 1st Team all league player this year but his numbers are comparable to last year. Interested to see if he is match up on Thomas or Naz on D, I would assume Naz.

Dakota Mathias---really good 3 point shooter. The kind of player you only like if he is on your team. The games he has played against Iowa he reminds me of the chunky kid that loves to party who shows up to intramurals and rains 3's all day. Doesnt look like a D1 player but can get hot.

PJ Thompson--not an offensive threat, not their best perimeter defender although he is aggressive with his defense. I think he will struggle trying to contain Monte.

Ryan Cline--3 point shooter and a decent one. 101 of his 125 FG attempts have been 3's this year.

They only play about 3 guys off the bench:

Haas--a large human being and fairly productive. Scores about 12 PPG while only averaging 20 MPG. For as big as he is, he has a pretty soft touch around the rim. Him and Swanigan dont play together a ton. I would be interested, because of ISU's lack of size, if Painter tries to run them more together tomorrow.

Carson Edwards--backup PG that is pretty quick. Averages almost 10 shots per game while playing about 23 MPG so not bashful about shooting.

Spike---Grad transfer from Michigan, was nearly the hero of the NCAA tourney as a true freshman back in 2013. Mulitple hip injuries, IIRC, that caused him to miss major time at Michigan. Doesnt score, has lost a couple steps because of his injuries and is really in there to run the offense while giving the other guards a breather.

Purdue led the B1G in 3 point % and averaged 80 PPG so this should be a fun game to watch.

I think ISU wins because of how well you are playing right now, it truly is impressive.

Swanigan is capable of having a 25 point, 20 reb game and literally carrying his team to victory.

Prediction:

ISU- 76

Purdue- 72
Haas and Swwnigan were on the floor together quite a bit yesterday. And Haas was horrible around the rim. Missed a couple of bunnies, as well as a dunk that he luckily got back and layed in. Granted, I don't watch a lot of them, but that's what I saw yesterday.

If we play as well as we did yesterday (overall - I know there were some lulls), I believe we win this game.

As others have said, their outside game doesn't scare me. Their bigs do when they're on offense. Big mismatch for Burton when ISU is on offense. Also, as others have said, I think ISU runs a lot more tomorrow.

ISU and Purdue dont contrast as much as you would think with tempo.

ISU averages 73.2 possessions per game and Purdue averages 72.0 possessions per game.

The biggest thing for ISU will be shutting down passing lanes, not letting Swanigan go off and keeping our "big" guys out of foul trouble. As said, the guy is a lock for double figures, but keeping him under 20 would help big time. We defend the court everywhere else well, so im not worried about other areas.

Nice Iowa quote, " ... and nobody left in the state penetentuary to offer a pardon and a scholly.Lots of future food servers, janitors and felons on this team."
Bowie, Naz, Holden all have degrees. Burton, Thomas, and I think Morris are all on pace to graduate this spring. So, yeah, "penetentuary" what ever in the **** that is.

Purdue's bigs are great but it'll be interesting to see how they try to guard us. Neither Biggie or Haas will have anything to do with Burton so I doubt we ever see them on the floor together. The Burton/Edwards matchup will be the key to the game.
I would think they would start off with Edwards on Burton. He has the athleticism to stay with him and cause possible problems with Burton's driving. Even though he can't match up with Burton's size I don't think it'll matter since Burton doesn't post up that much, he plays facing the basket.

They may have Swanigan cover Burton but I think that's not a matchup they'll like. Burton will drive past him and if he slags off, Burton will hit the three...hopefully.

Burton is going to be the key in this game. He's a mismatch for Purdue like against Baylor. I hope he can nail a few threes since he's been a little cold from there of late.

I think we will start with Young but I would bet we see a good dose of Bowie, Babb, or Jackson to pull Swanigan out and make him move. I'd actually like to see Bowie come in and start running around screens. I don't think Swanigan can withstand much of that. Then you get Haas and he won't be able to guard anyone on the perimeter.

Purdue is a good three point shooting team, though, so we will have to be good on the perimeter.

After watching them really struggle with Michigan twice, I just think they are going to have a lot of trouble with a team that is basically a more extreme version of Michigan in regard to style.

Purdue led the B1G in three point FG %, shot 40.7% on the season while attempting 729 threes.

By comparison, ISU shot 40.3% from deep this year and attempted 837 threes.

It is going to be a really fun game to watch.

The thing that makes me hopeful that ISU can win this game is that Purdue lost the last two games they played against Michigan. Swanigan is a beast but they are also a good 3 point shooting team. ISU's guards are superior but this one will be a game that goes down to the wire I imagine.

Touche. I guess I have watched 4 Purdue games in the past few weeks (only ones I've seen all year, also) but it seems like because of their bigs, the guards will get out and run but have to slow it up to allow Haas and Biggie to get their position. Also, if they do get out and run, that plays into our favor I think.

I think you let Solomon check Swanigan for a while, but I wouldn't be surprised to see us go small. We've really adopted a team rebounding mentality. We will give a few up, but I think anything we give up we get back in making Swanigan and Haas guard the perimeter. With their apparent weakness being giving up penetration, pull those two away from the hoop and go to work.

We need to try to make this an uptempo game for sure. Purdue has the obvious advantage on the inside, but I feel like they can't keep up with our tempo and Haas and Swanigan will tire, especially Haas. IMO, Haas is about as bad as someone that's 7'2" could be. He doesn't affect the game nearly as much as you'd think. Vermont isn't that big either, and they didn't have much of a problem with Haas.

I doubt we will see much Haas and Swanigan together, maybe only if we have extended minutes with Young and Bowie in together. Swanigan can move pretty well, but I don't think they want him guarding Burton.

Living with 3 Purdue Roommates has led me to watch an inordinate amount of Purdue games. They also watched a ton of ISU games so needless to say, we're hyped up for this match up.

Swanigan is gonna get his. Period. He "should" win Player of the Year so just let him do his thing and stay the hell out of foul trouble. Looking at you Burton and Young. I don't think we have to worry about Haas at all since he is just a big lumbering beast who is as clumsy as a four year old.

Purdue also has plenty of deep threats from 3 in Mathias, Cline, P.J., and both of the Edwards.

If we can keep the rebound difference to under +10 in Purdue's favor, that will be clutch.

They also struggle against teams with good PGs and since we have the best one in the nation, I'm saying the good guys win by 13 because Purdue falls apart in the last 2min pretty regularly and they'll do it again.
