Re: Rashad Vaughn

If Royce White stayed last year we probably went real far. That one guy would have been a program changer because the rest of the team was already in place.

Knowing how this year went for Royce, I feel like he stayed at ISU for the perfect amount of time. Had he returned, he could have been great, or very damaging.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I suppose I agree with this. Although Final Four talk may be a little pre-mature...

To clarify, I don't mean to imply Vaughn were to commit ISU would be a lock Final Four team. Too much goes into matchups, injuries, etc in the tournament to be that bold. I was just saying the 2014 team roster is already looking quite good and should be in the NCAA tourny team. There a few recruits could step on campus start day one and make a major impact (lead the team in scoring). I feel Vaughn can.

*********. We were a Final Four caliber team this year. And no, I'm not saying that we were one of the top-4 teams, just that nobody should have been too surprised if Iowa State would have advanced (especially in that region).

With the parity in college basketball these days, talking about making the Final Four is not a stretch for a lot of teams. Cinderella is dead. Just ballparking it here, but I'd say there are probably 30ish teams in the tournament each year that could make the Final Four and not completely blow everyone's minds. We were definitely one of those teams this year.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Vaughn would definitely be a program changer. Getting a top 6 player and the number one ranked SG, a one and done player would not only affect their on the court play but it would raise Iowa State in other top recruits eyes, raise the national profile.

With him playing at an elite prep school his rating may even go up since he will be performing against better competition.

Uhhhh.... no.

Talking about making the Final Four, for most teams, is a gigantic stretch of the imagination. Yes, it happens every year where one, sometimes two, teams makes the FF that had a low chance of getting there. But the odds are extremely small.

ISU was good this year. But not Final Four caliber.

ISU was good this year. But not Final Four caliber.

Most scenarios, I would agree with that, but this year was different because ISU was one Aaron Craft blocking foul and/or missed three away from having a very good shot at a Sweet Sixteen with these games as the only obstacles in their way to the Final Four:

Arizona
Winner of LaSalle vs. Wichita State

Hard to say ISU wasn't Final Four caliber in 2013 when they were thiiiiiis close to maybe becoming the favorite, or close to it, for coming out of the West to the Final Four.

Again, *********. The odds of actually making a Final Four are small (mostly because there are only 4 teams out of 356 that do it, duh), but I'm talking about the potential to make the Final Four. It was not a stretch of the imagination to think that Iowa State could have been one of the 4 teams.

The past few years, the average seed of a Final Four team was 4.3. Multiply that by 4 and you get between 17-18 teams in the tournament. It's not a stretch to think that there are a dozen or so more that had the ability to make the Final Four. ****, we've seen 8, 9, and 11 seeds made the Final Four in just the past 3 years.

Once you make the tournament, it's no longer a "gigantic stretch of the imagination". But I suppose a hok fan wouldn't know much about that from the past 12 years, would they?

And Iowa fans say the same thing about having made the NIT instead of the NCAA. Final Four teams get those lucky bounces, and obviously, there were some notable bounces that went against ISU this year.

When somebody says Final Four to me, it means one of the top 4 teams in the country. When a team loses in the round of 32, it's tough to envision them in the conversation for 4 best.

Anyways, back on topic, Vaughn would be a huge get.

Well, that's a 'you' problem. I'm hoping you aren't actually dumb enough to believe that the teams that make the Final Four are always the best 4 basketball teams in the country, though.

Yikes. You said so yourself, the average seed is 4.3 Remind me again, what was ISU's seed this year?

I really hope you don't actually believe there are 32+ Final Four caliber teams ever year. Because there's not. You're trolling me, right?

If you have to ask the answer is yes.

I disagree. We rarely, if ever, have the 4 best teams in the final four. but I would say its typically top top 15 teams that make the final four. And I don't think ISU was a top 15 team last year.

BUT, there is always that one team every year or two that sneaks into the final four (Wichita State this year) and ISU could have been that team with a few breaks.

(hating myself for continuing the tangent)

I don't think anyone here thinks ISU was a top 4 team, but the winner of our second round game had the easiest road to the final four that anyone has seen in a long time.

10 seed...a whopping one higher than the seed that actually did make the Final Four out of that bracket.

And yeah, I really do think there are about 30ish teams every year that have the ability to play their way into the Final Four. That has as much (or even more) to do with the increased parity in recent years, matchups, "streakiness", luck, the way the tournament is structured, etc. as it does with those teams' talent and abilities. 4 games in a row is what it takes...plenty of teams are capable of doing that.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

The way Fred was utilizing mismatches this year it was very tough for opponents to prepare in a short time. It is not crazy at all to say ISU could have made the Final Four if they got past Ohio State considering it was set up easy to do so in that region.
