Last year on the Monday following the final regular season games, the Big 12 announced their end-of-season awards at 5PM. That would have been yesterday. I wonder why they haven't been announced yet.

Who do peeps have for first team? Ryan was pre-season pick, does she make the All-Big 12? Crooks is a shoe-in for All-Big 12 so I think she probably bumps Ryan. Freshman of the year is a pick'em. Crooks and Brown are locks for freshman team. POY? FOY? Objectively those are tough votes for the coaches.

Some of the preseason picks look good but Crooks and Booker should bump some of the veterans off that first team. Harmon injured opens a spot and the Baylor gals haven't been top notch enough to put either on. Kansas freshman S'Mya Nichols has outshined both of the KU vets picked pres-season, not that she should be All-Big 12 but more maybe the vets should not be. Maybe one of the high scoring players from the bottom tier get a nod. interesting that a couple of unanimous picks haven't been Top Ten IMHO.

Here are the preseason coaches picks:

Preseason Player of the Year
Rori Harmon, Texas

Preseason Newcomer of the Year
Jada Walker, Baylor

Preseason Freshman of the Year
Madison Booker, Texas

Preseason All-Big 12 Team
Sarah Andrews, Baylor*
Darianna Littlepage-Buggs, Baylor
Emily Ryan, Iowa State
Zakiyah Franklin, Kansas
Taiyanna Jackson, Kansas*
Gabby Gregory, Kansas State*
Ayoka Lee, Kansas State
Skylar Vann, Oklahoma
DeYona Gaston, Texas
Rori Harmon, Texas*
JJ Quinerly, West Virginia
*- Denotes unanimous selection
A tie for the 10th spot resulted in 11 selections

Honorable Mention
Lauren Gustin (BYU), Holly Kersgieter (Kansas), Serena Sundell (K-State), Lior Garzon (Oklahoma State), Sedona Prince (TCU), Shaylee Gonzales (Texas), Aaliyah Moore (Texas), Bailey Maupin (Texas Tech)

I haven't checked, but didn't Audi have better stats than Madison Booker?

23 times a team has won the outright regular-season title
18 times the COTY went to the champion
5 non-champ COTY: Deb Patterson (T-3), Jim Littell (T-4, T-2), Karen Aston (2nd), Brandon Schneider (5th)

5 times there has been a tie for the regular-season title
3 COTY for the #1 seed (Jody Conradt, Gary Blair, Vic Schaefer)
1 COTY for the #2 seed (Mike Carey)
1 COTY for the #3 seed (Sherri Coale)

Coaches who have an outright or shared regular-season title, but not a COTY award

Looks like Crooks and Booker are the first freshmen to make first-team all-Big 12 since KSU's Ayoka Lee in 2019-2020. (Lee had a pretty great freshman season -- 16 ppg, 11 rpg, 3 bpg.) Looking at the winners from then until now, Crooks would have been an easy choice for FOTY in any other of the last three seasons. A bit unfortunate for her, but unanimous first-team is a pretty nice consolation prize.

Define better. Booker had 16.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 4.9 apg, 1.6 spg. Those are really good stats.

IMHO Audi's stats are almost clearly better because she's so much more efficient. Lower turnover rate, fewer shots per game, higher FG%, etc...but still per game averages are similar if you account that she scored more, rebounded more but had less assists.

On the advanced stats line Audi leads nearly across the board except win shares which are a product of having a fantastic team win/loss record and being the player most responsible for it. I'm guessing if we saw just Big 12 play win shares even that stat would be close because it would only be a 2 game difference.

I'm a women's basketball newbie but Audi being over 33 PER as a freshman would be incredibly rare for any mens player. She's 6 points higher than Booker in PER and way higher than any prominent recent mens freshmen year big men like Edey, Garza, and Hunter Dickinson.

In any MVP race though there's always "best player on a great team" logic. Was Texas so awesome that their top player automatically gets it? I'd be fine giving Shead MVP on the men's side even if there were some other guard who had better and more efficient stats, he's clearly the player driving the most winning.

Are there always 10 players on the all-Big 12 first team? Never noticed that before.

I’ll just say it…Crooks got screwed (I couldn’t resist). VERY surprised Ryan didn’t make at least honorable mention.

I always thought freshman of the year was just best freshman and did not require the freshman to lead a team to a championship or be ranked top 10 team in the nation. We were pretty bad when Fizer won freshman of the year...but he was just the most productive freshman, he wasn't "best freshman on a ranked team".

In a way I think it might make sense to vote Booker MVP for leading her team to a top ten season but Crooks freshman of the year because she was simply the most productive freshman. Would ISU have won more games if they swapped players? Hard to imagine making up for almost 20 and 10 in conference play.
