Do you pass up an opportunity of a lifetime to work near Google star Curt Cignetti and free Baskin Robbins for life?
You aren’t wrong but you’re like 4 years too late and 50,000th who has said this. Can we change the name of”NIL” when it’s clear the “NIL” is really about fundraising to pay student athletes and nothing about name, image, likeness?
That or everyone needs to revert to what the NIL was intended for: student athletes being paid for their use in marketing (commercials, autograph sessions, video games, etc)
I liked JP’s comment on the 365 sports interview where he said coaches salaries were based on what money they could bring in. Maybe the same should be done for athletes: they can now get paid for endorsements. They can go out and seek their own supplemental income
Just my two cents. I’m sure it won’t go over well, but I just don’t like that idea of buying championships. It’s not a great model for Major League Baseball, and it’s not a great model for college sports. But I get that’s the current landscape and ISU has to do what it needs to do to be competitive. I just don’t like the model as a whole

Has he shouted it from the highest mountain top yet? We could get up there, shout it, the evils of NIL / pay for play, and still no one will listen. 50 thousand x 50 thousand, won't matter. We all fall off said mountain top. Pretty likely actually. Or is the mountain top just getting smaller? You aren’t wrong but you’re like 4 years too late and 50,000th who has said this.
Me too. Maybe I’m a sky is falling guy now bc of what Blum said. Unfortunately I don’t have the resources to buy tickets and gear and then pay to keep or get players so I should just stop watching. I guess pro sports is the way to go. I don’t remember the last time an NFL/NBA team told me I need to contribute more money to keep players and coaches. This is all sooooo stupid. Why did I read through this thread? Now I think our whole basketball program is headed in the shitter after the season.
So, a 2-22 Iowa State team was not a total rebuild project?“No, he wouldn’t.” Indiana is a full on rebuild project
College athletics is trending the way of pro sports. I stopped watching the NFL years ago. The NBA has become so soft it is not even watchable.Me too. Kind of like Nebraksa football- legends in their own mind!Indiana always remains news worthy as a name brand. However, outside of the bobby knight years and I think a mike davis team that had a run, that program is basically the Dallas Cowboys. Always a talker in the media without any substance in 30 years
What exactly does this mean?I totally get your point and understand it.
I do think that it is being confused in this particular thread though. This thread was started about TJ taking the Indiana job and I think you are right that the reason he could consider it is that we aren't competitive in NIL. But when reading this thread it is easy to think that you are referring to TJ taking an extra 400k and the argument that it would be a bit stupid of him to do that is somewhat valid.
We probably need a completely new thread about how we are going to lose Jackson and Jefferson and whoever if we don't get our **** together on NIL.
If it isnt I dont know what is.So, a 2-22 Iowa State team was not a total rebuild project?
Some do think you can never miss a ‘the sky could fall’ opportunity. Regardless of the fact that TJ is not going to Indiana.Me too. Maybe I’m a sky is falling guy now bc of what Blum said. ISU had the secondary pull of his dream job. Would you want to pursue two rebuilds within 5 years? So, a 2-22 Iowa State team was not a total rebuild project?
Blum is just saying people shouldn't take anything for granted and to keep donating if you can. That's his job. People have been predicting the demise of ISU athletics for decades, and one day they may be right, but it's as strong as ever at the moment.Me too. I don’t think you need to read tea leaves or be an insider to know this is always going to be a problem. Guys on good teams with great roles pop up on other teams. Culture and fit matter, but it’s only worth so much.A little tea leaf reading says people who would know are concerned we may not have enough NIL to hold the core of this basketball team together. If that were to become a regular thing, of course Otz would need to consider that as part of whether or not ISU is where he needs to be. I don't like this system one bit, but for now it's what we're all stuck with. They've managed to do a good job so far but it will always be difficult for our fan base to keep up with the arms race.
Thank you. I’m super optimistic we are going to keep everything rolling. We just can’t get complacent (administration, fans, coaches, etc.) Appreciate the discussion and always try to be as transparent as possible with this new world.Blum is just saying people shouldn't take anything for granted and to keep donating if you can. Explain to me what a "modern rebuild" looks like. TJ seems to be good at it. After all, he inherited a 2-22 team and the very next season he had them in the Sweet 16. Indiana has money they need a coach who can create culture.. to answer your question- if I was at my dream job I would not entertain a potential offer. If I was a Chris Beard type, always looking for next big job, the answer would yes. The portal and NIL make it much easier than the old model.ISU had the secondary pull of his dream job. Would you want to pursue two rebuilds within 5 years?
