Is McDermott's job security in danger

NO WAY will McD be fired. He took a bag of crap, and is working to sort it out. Clearly it cannot take forever, but I'm willing to give a pretty long leash to McD.

Let's not turn a Chizik situation into a McD situation.

This will not happen because no major programs want McDermott...but apparently at least one major program wants Chizik.

Funny, the Elite Eight trip came after Floyd left.

True...but as you looked at the program there was some things behind the scenes that were disconcerting...total lack of incoming recruits...not capitalizing on that success...and major player attrition. It was small but it started the day the music died(Floyd leaving).

Exhibit A...we couldn't secure two of the states top two recruits...Collison and Hinrich.

To be fair even though he has had players leave in each of his seasons we did just get that four star point guard Chris Colvin. So even if this season is not that great we have quality players that he is recruiting to look foward too

It doesn't matter if he gets a roster of 5 star kids, if they don't rebound and play defense they are not going to win any more games then they currently have. What happened to the gritty teams of the past? When we lost they at least new it was a fight to win the game. That is how most of Floyd and Eustachys teams played. I want to get back to those days of defense winning games.

If UNI has another season like last year Jacobson will be done after this season. Next year is a huge year for McDermott......obviously. The next two recruiting classes are looking more like what it takes to win in the Big 12 (Colvin, Gilstrap, Dykstra, Kadima.....and Barnes is a must).

Last 3 years
Attendance slipping (Not ticket sales)
Hilton has become just another gym (Quiet)
1-7 vs the Mo-Valley
2-7 vs the in-state schools
0 wins vs schools rated in the top 40.

I like Greg, but years 4 and 5 need to be 23 plus win seasons......20 doesn't get you in the tourney any more, especially with schedules like ours this year.

Seriously?!? The guy's style of basketball will never be able to compete in a large conference. Mac himself said when he was hired that he plays a boring brand of basketball - that is, low post big man basketball. But this is not 1988. Just look at nearly every team that makes the sweet 16 of the NCAA tourney the last few years...I beg you to find a team that plays a half-court slow down style of basketball. If we want to compete we need to run, run, run - not sit on our butts and watch the opponent run us into the ground while we try to establish an inside game (esp. when we have NO real big men - just look at what Tate from Iowa was able to do against Brackins). Instead of adapting his coaching style to the players and talent we have, he tries to cram these guys into a style of play that they are not suited for. Why in the hell are we playing 4 guards and not pushing it up the frigging court?!?!

Members of this forum need to come to their senses. I understand that Mac is a likable guy, but hell we don't need likable guys (George W. Bush), we need guys who will get the job done! And that is win.

And if anyone still thinks he deserves another year because of his potential recruits coming in, I say wake up, its been three years and still nothing to show. We should at least have something to show for his efforts. And how good will next year be anyway? Does anyone really think that freshmen are gonna save the program in their first year? We need to take stock of what we have and what he has done, and that is nothing...get rid of him.

Lets deal with one coaching crisis at a time- it's a long time till we finish this season, we can talk about this when the time comes.

I think JP is thinking the same thing... Also, Gmac gets a chance until Harrison barnes commits somewhere else. There's no way JP puts HB's recruitment into jeopardy by bringing in a new coach now.

This thread is ridiculous. This is just like the football program do you really think we would get someone better. Someone that wants to come to ISU and stay. We see to have a problem keeping players and coaches so why don't we support the ones that actually want to help us win and want to be here.

McDermotts job hinges on HB? OMG, dumb. I would hope his job hinges on his performance over his contract. We should be focussing our negativity on a coach who betrayed us not a coach who wants to be here.

I'm as big of a MCDermott hater as they come.

i thought it was a dumb hire in the 1st place.

but i want to give him one more year after this one. we are very very young.
give him one more to be sure and then don't just put him out on the curb... curbstop his a$$

I don't hate the guy, but I didn't like the hire. He is a good guy, but I doubt his recruiting and his offensive system leaves a lot to be desired.

With that said, I too want to give him one more year after this. If next season doesn't result in postseason play, it is time to move in a new direction. There is no energy within the program and it is going to get worse until he wins a couple of games that he shouldn't.

I hope it's not in danger... I think Mac has been doing all the right things. The jump I saw Diante make from last year to this year has been incredible. I can't wait to see this year's freshmen play next year... and DG and Brackin's play next year...

McD is class and will get it done.

GMac is Safe

I was highly disappointed by the last 2 losses. IMO poor coaching lost both games. I hope he learns that the 4 guard line-up doesn't work! I realize Drake & Iowa were quicker, so he went small. However, even with 4 guards on the court the other teams were STILL quicker and we have no rebounding. Also, a zone worked against UNI- why not use against Iowa or Drake? The facts are simple Petey & Lucca can't stop dribble penetration.

The excuse that ISU is young is silly and being young doesn't automatically mean a teams record is going to improve in the future. I am also disappointed by ISU's halfcourt offense. We have too many guys hanging out at the 3 point line. What happened to all those great half courts sets? Garrett dribbles way too much.

I am also a bit concerned by what seems like hit or miss recruiting. There are too many kids that jump ship or just don't hit the court.

That said, I think GMAC is doing things right. He recruits good kids and he slowly seems to be building a team. Colvin & Gilstrap seem to fill needs. I am a bit concerned that even next year we won't have a Homan type player in the post or a Stinson type on the perimeter that can be a go to type player.

McDermott was reportedly offered the Iowa job after Alford left (with a sizeable raise) and said no.

I may not be the biggest fan of the guy, but at least he's someone I can respect.

All I know is I'm extremely happy to have a loyal coach for our Basketball team. When he does succeed, it'll be nice to not have a coach bailing on us for other programs in the middle of the night.
