i don't know about runaway success. Larry ****ed up recruiting. Tim sort of did too.

I think the bottom line is a non blueblood program like Iowa state is never going to have long term sustained success changing coaches every 5 years. I don't care if they were fired, left before they were fired, had a drinking problem, or left to follow their only true dream in life. It just doesn't breed success. I thought maybe s home town guy that begged for the job might want to stay. Now, I've got to hope prohm does.

If Prohm has any kind of success he's gone too. Not seeing him passing up the Louisville or Kentucky jobs and not take his wife back home to Kentucky. I worry about that as both coaches are getting toward the end, especially Pitino. I'd guess he'd strongly consider Georgia or Alabama too.

Because college basketball requires 4 year guys, not just juniors and seniors. It seems like he went for a few big fish and when he didn't get them (specifically because he couldn't commit to here) he gave up.

And frankly it doesnt matter what Fred started with because we are talking about now, not 6 years ago. Everyone knows fred turned this place around. No one denies that. People are mad that he turned it around and then left in way he did. He could have handled it way better.

Fred took a roster of what 3 scholarship players and got them to the NCAA's after 1 year of making over the roster. Fred wouldn't have skipped a beat if he stayed here next year. He would have brought in way better transfers at the end of the year that Prohm did, and he would have coached this years teams better.

To try to pretend that Fred who is an NBA coach after only 5 years of sitting on a bench wouldn't be doing better than Prohm currently, or going forward is just sheer lunacy.

Frustration would be my word of choice for the end of the Fred era here. It appears that he wanted out (for whatever reason) two years ago. Otherwise, why even pick up the phone when the Gophers called and evidently interview with every NBA team that was looking for a coach the past two years.

He was an excellent recruiter when he could commit to being at Iowa State... Niang, Morris, Thomas to name three. If he was actually serious about staying at ISU long term recruiting wouldn't have dropped off like it did.

I don't think Fred had an issue with recruiting until he decided two years ago he'd rather be somewhere else... Gophers, Pelicans, Golden State, Bulls... wherever.

I don't believe Fred is a liar. Having to lie to recruits about his future in order to get them to sign is something that would be distasteful.

I'm not sure what to think about Fred. It's puzzling to me.

He claimed he loved ISU and would only leave ISU if he could go to the NBA, but then he was interviewing for the Gophers job. Now that didn't make any sense whatsoever. I still think he didn't like something here... whether it was JP or something else, I don't know, but make no mistake, Fred was wanting out of here pretty bad for some reason?

And then deciding to go to the Bulls didn't make any intelligent sense either, unless all you care about is money, but Fred doesn't seem like a guy that cares only about money. Anyone with half a brain could see how bad of a job the Bulls job was. No cap room, and a roster full of old deteriorating guys. I know Fred was smart enough to see what a disaster that job was going to be, so why take it? Was it all about the money?

As someone else said, I care only about ISU, not Fred Hoiberg. He can do whatever he wants, but I feel no loyalty in continuing to support him. I wish no harm to him of course, but it wouldn't bother me in the least either if he discovers in the end what a big mistake it was in leaving ISU. People always think it's going to be greener somewhere else, but that isn't always the case. Sometimes you just need to realize just how good you have it.

He was the hometown hero in Ames, and in Chicago nobody cares about Fred Hoiberg at all. They want him gone already. So I guess you make your own bed, now you have to sleep in it. Unfortunate IMO.

Maybe he didn't like living in the fishbowl of Ames, and would rather live in Chicago where he can probably go out to eat with his family without someone interrupting him.

But lying to the fan base is okay. I want to retire here (actually not a lie, but deceiving). He should have said, "after I make millions coaching elsewhere, I want to retire and head back to Ames."

Doug McDermott is going off against Toronto right now. Career high 30pts so far. Remember when we had Greg McDermott as a coach? And how we didn't get Harrison Barnes? I just thought if we are dwelling in the past might as well bring up more people in the NBA currently.

If Prohm is successful who cares what he does. He is only human. I wouldn't mind coaching Kansas. I personally always loved how he represented ISU. A class act. Some things I was a little butt hurt over. Oh well life goes on.

Probably just in time for Fred to take the reigns from retiring Bill Self LOLLOL

What part of this is nuts. That he's not going to have success here or he wouldn't take those jobs? I'd be more worried about the former than latter. If he takes this team a few rounds deep into the tournament and does the same with his recruits in a few years his agent's phone will be ringing from big boy programs. He'd have the same resume as Tubby Smith or Billy Gillispie. Louisville would likely favor somebody with a less slimy pedigree after Pitino.

I really like the guy, but he and his wife have roots from Kentucky southward. This is a stepping stone gig for him someplace warmer.

So if Diallo signs with ISU in April, do you think he's not going to ask for and be granted his release when Hoiberg goes to the Bulls?
He likely would have given Prohm a chance. You think that Diallo doesn't regret going to KU at this point? He would get 10 minutes a game in an ISU uniform no problem, just to rest some of our guys.

diallo must be miserable at ku. He got yanked within 15 seconds today. Self has no patience with him.

Diallo would have played zero minutes at ISU given how the NCAA barely cleared him to play for KU. Any player with eligibility questions who has blue blood offers would be insane not to go that route regardless of how the playing time competition looks.

Sure, who wants to live in a small town you grew up in where everyone fawns over you and the media treats you with kids gloves. Much better to go to a franchise that is clearly in decline so everyone in one of the largest cities in the country hates you and the media eviscerates you. No one would bother him at dinner unless they want to tell him he sucks. Sounds great.
