He’s not wrong. ISU will absolutely jump ship it offered by the Big Ten or Pac. And they should. You can try to pump this new conference up all you want, but it won’t be 3rd best in the nation. That’s just reality. Reality is also that ISU, at least currently, doesn’t have any better option. The two ideas don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

I would say it currently is the 3rd best if you look at the teams that will be in it in 2025. Have you not paid attention to the ACC and PAC? Honestly it might be a better conference than the current one, Texas and Houston being a wash football wise, Cinci, BYU, and UCF all are current strong programs.

I hate that this thread is 50% realignment talk, but here I go, about to contribute to it.

The other conferences can’t/won’t vote the Big 12 out of the autonomy conferences, for the same reason the Big 10 can’t vote out Rutgers in 10 years for being past their usefulness. The lawsuits would be massive. Never mind that I think that whole outlook is overly pessimistic. But we’ve covered that ad nauseam.
“I’m not being pessimistic, I’m being realistic!” The go to of every neurotic with a fixed world view.

“Second tier conference” do Texas fans really think they make a difference with their performance in the conference? Texas football has been nothing but average to below average since Colt McCoy. Them leaving only hurts this conference financially, nothing else. The B12 will be the premier basketball conference and Cincinnati, BYU and UCF have all had better football programs than Texas (all but UCF have had better basketball too) the last 10 years. I personally am looking forward to seeing them be bottom feeders and never make it out of the dungeon in the SEC and their boards will all be saying “we should’ve never left the B12”, “we could be the premier program in the B12 right now”. They are delusional, almost as much as TOE fans.

There are enough bad teams in the SEC they will be middle of the road and get somewhere between 7-9 wins a season.

Also remember the SEC likes to protect the money makers. Georgia and Alabama only have to play each other twice every 12 years in the regular season. Adding more teams just dilutes and protects the name brands even more.

The SEC championship game drew 9.0 million viewers, more than triple the B12 championship game.
I may not have been clear but I was talking about the national championship game. It drew about 18 million with Alabama vs Ohio State. The previous year was about 26 million. The 6 years prior to that it drew an average of over 27 million. That is a huge drop in viewership.

I can't really for the life of me imagine why the P5 conferences agreed to a 4-team playoff format that automatically excludes at least one, and possibly more, of the participating conferences from having a chance at making the playoff. Of course, it's great for ESPN...congrats to them I guess for selling it to the P5.
I think the traditional bowl lobby was still pretty important back then. I also think that the influence the SEC and Big 10 would have on the selection committee and its rules was not fully realized. It became obvious the very first year that the system was rigged. Thank you Tom Osborne and Jeff Long.

The problem with the Texas football program is that since Mac left, no coach has been able to change the culture within that program. That athletic department spoils the football players rotten and they created the problem. Say what you want about Strong, Herman, and Sark but the culture of that program can't be fixed until you take away the keys to the convertible and hand them a bike. IMO Texas is getting really damn close to hitting a point where I don't think you can even correct the problem.

I believe you are right, but visit the Surl and they all want to throw more money through NIL's. They believe the solution is to buy a team. They are rich but I can't believe they will have better bag men than the top dogs of the SEC.

Is Texas going to lose to Kansas this week? That's my big question.

Season Series
2016 (Strong): UT lost at KU 24-21 in OT
2017 (Herman): UT beats KU 42-27 at home
2018 (Herman): UT beats KU 24-17 on road
2019 (Herman): UT beats KU 50-48 at home
2020 (Herman): game canceled
I had the same thought and posted similarly a day or so ago. I'm optimistic (rated your post the same)

Every bowl game, along with the regular season, had significant drops last year. I generally agree with your point, but don’t know if the bowl viewership necessarily supports it.

On Surly Horns there was one of their fans ******** because a bunch of little kids were throwing the Horns down, they said it was disrespectful. LOL f*ck them whiners. They are rich but that is really all they have going for them. Even though the one fan I interacted with was nice.

This thread is so disappointing. I keep clicking on it thinking there will be more wonderfull Texas tears that we can all enjoy together, and instead it has turned into another tired conference debate, as if these same points haven't been made countless times in all the other threads that have gotten hijacked by this subject.
Here you go.

I think that we should watch what happens in the upcoming negotiations for all conferences before making sweeping generalizations
Absolutely agree, this is just my thinking up to this point with the information provided. Obviously all goes out the window if there is more realignment or other large dominoes fall- which we have seen is very possible

for actual football on-the-field performance I would expect the conference to be to remain 2 or 3 (big 10 minus ohio state is trash but their alum network/geography and media partners keep them relevant)

whether or not we get treated as 2 or 3 (or a glorified American) in the media depends on our conference negotiations, relationships, and future potential

pac 12 and acc are pretty bad right now, and I don't know if that's going to be something that could be turned around

I don't think so. The media has paraded around with a very mediocre Oregon team propped up its shoulders all season. Close wins vs bad teams. Not un-similar to OU, who is undefeated and in a P5 but on the outside looking in at the playoff right now.

The talking heads also have really tried to push for the ACC upstarts this year --Pitt, Wake-- in lieu of Clemson's worst season in a decade. Those teams would not be fighting for a Big 12 championship right now IMO.

The Big 12 is the butt of everyone's joke.

Except Oregon beat OSU. A pretty hard thing to ignore. And Wake Forest was ranked #9. There was zero chance that any other ACC would be that low at 8-0. If that’s Cleamson, they’re top 6.
